The space
This light & modern self-contained apartment provides sweeping 270 degree panoramic views over New Zealand's Hauraki Gulf. It's very spacious and light and has it's own lounge kitchen area, a bedroom with queen size bed, a bathroom, a walk in ward robe and a little hall way. No meals included.

Guest access
The apartment is attached to our home, but completely separate, with it's own front door, kitchen facilities, etc. Guests also have access to the swimming pool, which is shared with the owners of the our home, but is not heated, so suitable for summer use only.

Other things to note
The apartment is self-contained, has its own entrance, but is part of a comfortable eco-house, from where we will assist in looking after the solar & wind power and firewood systems of the house. The unheated swimming pool with a view is available for a splash in summer. There is no reticulated power or water. We try to use as little power as posssible and ask you to do the same. Water is heated by the sun or by a wet-back heater. We will set the fire for you for the first night and you are welcome to help yourself to wood from the firewood shed after that.

The very remote location only shared with your hosts is perfect for a honeymoon! Astronomers & other stargazers looking for a place without light pollution but with a large deck from where the night sky can be viewed in its full glory are also very welcome.

Keep an eye out for diving dolphins, whales working schools of fish, graciously gliding gannets & cray fisherman checking their pots. You may occasionally have to check that your book is still in your lap & that your drink is still at hand, but you may completely forget about them, too.

Once you're totally relaxed, you could go & explore the island, or have a splash in the shared unheated swimming pool (with views!!) in summer.

Where you’ll be

Great Barrier Island, Auckland, New Zealand

Our closest neighbours live 600m away. The nearest shop is 20 minutes, 4WD or a 2 hr walk, the closest restaurant is a 15 minutes drive away. It's secluded! You're welcome to go for a walk on the property, walk to a look out over the bay below. Or, for morning exercise, walk up and down the drive. 30 min. and a 100m height difference.

Born in the Netherlands, I have been living in New Zealand since 1999. I love my new country, spending time on the beach with my family and spending time at home doing creative stuff. Cats are my favourite pets, but I also like chickens and the eggs they provide. When I go on holiday, I like to go on road trips, to visit friends and family, and beautiful places. There's plenty of those in New Zealand. I also love visiting my old country and the islands of the Pacific. I like to treat others the way I would like to be treated and am a firm believer in the Dutch saying: Wie goed doet goed ontmoet. I enjoy hosting people at the XSPOT and try to make sure that they have a great break, both in our apartment and on Great Barrier Island. I have been interested in astronomy for a while now, as Great Barrier's sky is just so good, and in 2017 I've set up the business Good Heavens, with my friend Deborah. We provide Dark Sky Experiences to visitors to Great Barrier Island. So much fun! Ask me about it if you are interested.
