Where you’ll be

Swanpool, Victoria, Australia

You can relax and enjoy the garden and our small farm and use it as a base to explore the region.

You can hike or drive around beautiful Mt Samaria and the Strathbogie Ranges, ski at Mt Buller, go boating and fishing at Lake Nillahcootie, walk or bike ride around the Winton Wetlands or travel along the Ned Kelly Trail.

The Swanpool Cinema has double feature movies on Saturday and Sunday evenings as well as some Friday evenings (see www.swanpoolcinema for the current program). The cinema has a short winter recess (between July and September 2018) when an art exhibition is shown.

The historic Tatong Tavern is just a short 10min drive away. Lunch is available from Wednesday to Sunday and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.

You can also try out the wide variety of restaurants in Mansfield and Benalla or you can pick up a take-away for dinner and heat it in the microwave provided. There are great local Thai, Indian and Chinese restaurants that also do take-away. You also have access to a BBQ, microwave and fridge.

Taste local wines at the Kooyunga Creek winery open on Friday to Sunday. The Swanpool Store also has a great selection of local wines.

Most weekends in summer you can watch gliders ride the thermals above Benalla and you can even take a tandem flight with one of the experienced local pilots.

Thirty minutes away, the Winton Raceway has an all year calendar of events including the Historic Winton Veteran Cars in May.

I moved with my partner Michael from inner Melbourne to North East Victoria eight years ago to our small mixed farm in Swanpool where we produce Shiraz and Chardonnay wine from our small vineyard, run a flock of dorper sheep and experiment with different varieties of plants in our hilltop garden.

The more time we spend in this part of North East Victoria the more wonderful things we have discovered. Such as watching movies at the Swanpool Cinema from a Gold Class lounge chair with a home made choc top in hand, to savouring a local cider before digging in to famous parmigiana at the Tatong Tavern to taking the scenic backroads via Power's Lookout with its spectacular views to the King Valley to try some of Victoria's best wines.

Having travelled widely we feel we have finally found home and enjoy sharing our country hideaway with guests, friends and family. We look forward to doing some traveling again soon and would like to meet and share our experiences with fellow travellers.
