The Post Office transports you to another time and place, our heritage-listed accomodation is the heart of the beautiful town of Waratah.

Opposite the Waratah Waterfall, The Post Office offers views of Mount Pearce and the expansive Happy Valley, which stretches out into the Tarkine wilderness. Waratah is nestled in a wilderness-rich pocket of Tasmania's North West and is the perfect base from which to explore the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and the ancient Tarkine wilderness.

The space
The Post Office is a 1913 heritage-listed post office that has been lovingly restored into a luxury escape for couples but accommodates up to four guests. Located directly across the road from the Waratah Waterfall there are expansive views from every window.

With many of its original features intact, such as 4.2 metre high pressed tin ceilings, arched sash windows, the original cedar post office counter, brass fixtures and walk in bank safe, The Post Office's varied and rich history is evident for guests to interact with and enjoy. Pour a cocktail and pop on some music and emerse yourself into The Post Office experience. You won't want to leave.

The perfect couples retreat.

The space has been designed to be sympathetic to the era with comfort in mind. Filled with a curated collection of antiques, oil paintings and unique pieces. The wood pellet fire is the centre of the living area and will keep you toasty and warm in winter. The cosy feather filled extra long sofa and custom velvet bench seat are perfect for curling up with a book or with your morning coffee and overlook the ever changing views of Happy Valley and Tarkine rainforest.

The beds are made with 100% flax linen bedding, micro fibre toppers and are fitted with electric blankets.

The main bedroom is located in a private corner of the open plan living area. The layout, designed with privacy and comfort in mind, features a floor to ceiling velvet curtain and purpose-built half wall to successfully separate the living and sleeping quarters.

The cosy second bedroom boasts a bed nook, with a cast iron bath. The layout, warm colour palette and lighting has been purposefully designed to create a romantic space, into which guests can retreat. This space may not be suitable for guests with mobility concerns.

The main bathroom has underfloor heating and a large, level access shower and toilet.

The original post office counter has been re-purposed into an island bench in the kitchen which takes centre stage in the main living area.

We have a full kitchen that includes a 5 gas burner ILVE oven and a large SMEG fridge, freezer and microwave.

We have been featured in Country Style Magazine, Urban List, Together Journal, Stay Awhile Magazine, The Tasmanian Tuxedo and named one of The 30 Most Beautiful Airbnb’s in Tasmania by Design Stays.

Guest access
The property is accessible via two main entrances, the main guest entrance and the original double-door Post Office customer entrance. Both have only two steps to negotiate from street level.

The property is completely yours.

We are proudly an inclusive stay and all guests of any background or community are welcomed into our safe space.

Gatherings or parties of any kind are restricted unless agreed by prior arrangement with us. Elopements or Intimate weddings are possible please contact us directly to discuss.

Other things to note
We stock basic pantry supplies including freshly ground coffee, a tea station comprising of a range of organic herbal and black teas, hot chocolate, sugar, extra virgin olive oil, vinegars, sea salt and pepper and some herbs and spices.

We also provide breakfast provisions for your first nights stay, which includes milk, eggs, butter, jam and a bread maker with ingredients to make freshly baked bread.

Due to our location, we recommend stocking up on supplies before you arrive as there are limited options within Waratah itself, though the Waratah Roadhouse does stock convenience store items and take away food options and you can get a meal at the Bischoff Hotel. Both are a short walk from the Post Office and are open 7 days a week.

The Post Office is in close proximity to many of Tasmania's western wilderness attractions, so you will often see a range of wildlife at our doorstep. It’s not uncommon to see wallabies and wombats roaming around grazing on the landscape around the property.

Waratah is 600 meters above sea level and sees snowfall a number of times during and either side of winter. Naturally during snowfalls care should be taken travelling local roads, which are well maintained but this shouldn’t affect your travel plans. Please keep this in mind and ensure that you have travel insurance to cover you for any unforeseen circumstances. We are unable to offer refunds for any reasons not prescribed in the cancellation policy.

Due to the delicate nature of our furniture and linens, no children or pets are allowed, unless by prior arrangement. Please contact us to discuss. We also ask that shoes are not worn inside.

Please contact us to discuss location shoots, elopements and professional photography on our property, prior to booking, as site fees may apply.

Hello, I’m Madeleine. I live in southern Tasmania. I am a passionate cook and love to dabble in interior and floral styling. When I’m not working, you’ll find me in our garden or wandering through an antique shop. I am forever looking for that special piece! One of our favourite things to do as a family is to pack the car and go away for the weekend. We have been fortunate to stay at many beautiful properties over the years and it’s been a dream to create and host a home of our own.
