The space

Enjoy country life on a working property while only a 25 minute drive from the national attractions of Canberra. You can either stay in three large, comfortable bedrooms (two with Queen size beds) in the south east wing of the farmhouse with separate entrance, fridge and tea and coffee making facilities or else arrange exclusive use of the whole homestead with five bedrooms and two bathrooms.

In the south east wing enjoy the stylish bathroom with freestanding bath and large shower recess. Continental breakfast provided either in your own room or in the homestead kitchen. Guests who want to cook up their own storm can use our large, modern kitchen complete with two large ovens, five burner gas cooktop and expansive island bench. Or if you like, home cooked dinners can be arranged. When it's time to dine, sit down in our large dining room complete with a blazing fire and comfortable sofas. The sitting room is also available to guests to relax in any time of the day.

Outside, there's your own private courtyard or sit on the front verandah and enjoy the homestead's stunning views across the Murrumbidgee River valley to the Brindabella Mountains from the front lawn. Tennis court. Wineries and restaurants nearby.

So whether you're a couple in the nation's capital to work, to visit the Gallery, enjoy Floriade in Spring or here with the kids to 'do' Canberra why not combine a stay in the country with a visit to the city? You can book one bedroom or all three.

Wallaroo is a well known for its vineyards and wineries and is at the heart of the cool climate wine growing district on the outskirts of Canberra. They're well worth a visit along with local restaurants and cafes.

Guest access

When you're staying at Wattagan Homestead you can walk pretty much as far as you can see. Hike down to the creek, inspect our herd of gentle Murray Grey breeding cattle or meet the pet sheep. If you're feeling energetic have a hit on the tennis court or relax and watch the sun go down over the Brindabellas. Your bedroom has direct access to its own private courtyard where you can relax and use the BBQ to cook dinner. Our large, farmhouse kitchen is available for your use. If you prefer not to cook, you can pre-arrange with us to have a delicious country dinner in front of a blazing fire in the dining room (in winter of course) which also has comfortable sofas for after dinner conversation. This sitting room is available to guests throughout their stay. In summer you can dine al fresco on the front lawn.

Jon was great with information prior to our visit. The house was beautifully presented on arrival, including a glowing fire and provisions for breakfast. Bedrooms & bathrooms were spotless and warm, with quality linen. Wonderful kitchen. The house is set in the most gorgeous countryside yet only a short drive down to Canberra. Great pub and shopping within 10 minutes.

This secluded homestead has generous sized bedrooms, with beautifully made beds, warm fires, excellent features such as pool table, large dining room, kitchen with all amenities and toys and games. It suited our large family perfectly. The hosts were friendly, accommodating, helpful and genuine. We enjoyed our stay immensely and look forward to our next trip to Canberra so that we can have the opportunity to stay again. Thank you Jon.

An amazing house with fabulous hosts. Both Jon and Meg were lovely and made us feel very welcome in their home. The house was spacious and beautifully furnished. Meg even lit a fire for us on the first night. We stayed there for 3 nights for my daughters wedding and all our guests were very pleased with our accommodation. Thank you Jon and Meg for making our stay very memorable and we hope to come back in the future.

Interaction with guests

Jon Murphy is a third generation farmer who's happy to show you our farm. He's also an expert on the locals. He knows the best wineries and places to eat and what's on in town. But if you want solitude we are more than happy to disappear and leave you to soak up the serenity.

About Jon

I'm a third generation farmer originally from the flat wheat country of north west NSW now relishing the four season climate and mountain views of the south west tablelands. With my wife Meg, I run Murray Grey breeding cattle on Wattagan along with a couple of pet sheep, a retired race horse and several dogs. Wattagan Homestead is a sprawling seven bedroom house which now, with the children gone, we are opening to visitors so they can enjoy country life as much as we do.
I think I am pretty much your quintessential bush bloke - easy going and practical. I'm happy to show you around the farm if you like but if it's peace and quiet you're after I'm just as happy to disappear. We can also offer great, home cooked meals if you give us some notice.
Over the years we have formed strong friendships and contacts in the local district so we are well placed to recommend the best local attractions including the highly regarded cool climate wineries.
