The space
Welcome to our secret garden: a private park-like property above an isolated stretch of Barton Creek overlooking an undeveloped hill-country peninsula. Stairs with handrail to the creek. Entirely apart from our house, your lovely, spacious 1,200 sq. ft. space (one of two upstairs units) includes two queen bedrooms, full bath, living room with two-twin bed sectional sofa, full kitchen with island seating, and laundry. A desk with a large work area sits in one of the bedrooms. Sip coffee or wine on the clifftop terrace with view overlooking the canyon. Only 11 miles to downtown Austin, 10 to UT, 9 to Zilker Park. Stairs. Parking.

*The space
We have lived here since 1988, and we are increasingly aware of what a special place this is, with private access to Barton Creek, overlooking an undeveloped peninsula and the creek itself. Your guest quarters is a recently remodeled empty nest (brand new bath and kitchen) -- your safe haven as you return from exploring Austin or Barton Creek, just below us.

* Outdoors
Visit the creek via our three-story stone staircase with new railing; wade or soak in the spring-fed crystal-clear water -- ditch the swimsuit, because you won't see anyone else in this hidden spot--but bring water shoes, and maybe a fishing pole. Small spotted bass, tiny bluegill, and catfish. Catch and release.

Bring water shoes! The creekbed is rocky.
Tubes available for floating in the creek.
Bird-watchers will notice a wide variety of birds, from cardinals, hummingbirds, finches and painted buntings to kingfisher and heron at the creek. Recently we have been listening to a Summer Tanager. Keep your eyes peeled for deer and the occasional fox as you drive in. Over the years we have seen porcupine, badger, coyote, rabbits, armadillos, as well as owls, hawks, and roadrunners. In addition to your own garden bench, you may relax on our cliffside stone terrace, overlooking legendary Barton Creek.
Play frisbee, touch football, or croquet in our large, grassy yard. Basketball on the drive, trampoline in the garden.

Where you’ll be

Austin, Texas, United States

We are located just west of Westlake Hills, a beautiful historic suburb dedicated to preserving the Hill Country. Nearby are two coffee shops (Lola Savanah on Bee Caves Rd. and The Civil Goat, on Cuernavaca). We are 1.5 miles from the Hill Country Galleria, with shops, restaurants, Whole Foods, and Barnes and Noble, and The Village at Westlake, with Starbucks, HEB grocery, and P. Terry's and Hat Creek, local hamburger places. Commons Ford Park is a lovely, lakeside park with easy and slightly more challenging hiking trails -- about a five-minute drive.

We live in Austin, Texas, where Ron is a chemical engineer in the energy sector and Gena is a historian and musician. We have raised four boys in Austin: Cyrus works in reticle engineering in San Jose; Pete is in sound production; Maff is a civil rights and employment litigator. Our youngest, Julius, is a student at Vanderbilt, majoring in mathematics and music. We love to hike and walk with our Bouvier, Evie, and we love our place on Barton Creek.
