My wife and I stayed here for one month, and it was …. a challenge. It was a difficult situation because the host had a family tragedy just as we arrived, which resulted in three more people permanently staying in the house, which is small. My wife and I tried very hard to be und…

Response from Jillian:
Wow. I agree this time has been a challenge. I did inform the guests before coming that my grandchildren would be staying with me and just when they arrived a tragic situation developed and that I informed them that I didn't know what to expect. The only additional person was their mother who stayed out of the need to be near her son and to make travel to the hospital etc. more convenient for them. I don't dispute that it was chaotic over the time they stayed and, for me, I was physically and emotionally trying to keep things together for both my family and my guests. With medical guidance my grandson has used pot as a coping tool but has NEVER smoked it in my house. The guest insisted that smoke was coming out of his room and along with the guest we went into the room to investigate. My granson was not even in the house at the time and all that I could smell was the pot itself, which did have a strong smell - but it was not smoke. Since it was very hot, the guests most likely had their window open with a fan going and I assume the smoke from outside the house was drawn in that way. I most definitely spoke with my grandson and his mother about smoking anything near the house and they complied. After that complaint the guest said he would give it two days. Since they continued their stay, I assumed that he was satisfied with our adjustments that the smell was no longer an issue. ONCE, there was something rotting in the compost bucket kept in the kitchen. They must have opened it to put something in before I was aware that it was smelling. Again we investigated, found the problem and I dealt with it immediately. I felt very uncomfortable with the guest's presence for their whole stay, partly because of the heartbreaking issue I was also dealing with, but also due to their manner of speaking to me (which made me feel like I was their servant) and they were very noisy. I even had to ask the man to have a little compassion with the situation. They were free to leave if they needed to. I didn't write a review for them as I wasn't sure if I was just being oversensitive and I didn't want to jeopardize their future AirBnB experiences. I felt that I did a great deal to accommodate their requests. This is an old house, and is listed as such, although I may not have been on top of the cobwebs, their room was clean, freshly painted floor when they arrived and I did my best to keep up with the rest of the chores while providing a sanctuary for my grandson, who was my priority. I apologize that these guests found this to be such a challenge for them. I would not welcome them back into my home, mostly due to their attitude and lack of compassion. As one can see from previous feedback, this was a most unusual situation.
