The space

Open March - September, private room with ensuite shower room at the B&B on the peaceful village square by the beautiful old church. Chez Maison Bleue in the hills south of Carcassonne dates from the 18th century and offers you authentic, rural France - winding staircases, ancient stone walls and beams, parquet floors, shuttered windows, step into the lovely old square and feel like time really has stood still for the past 50 years.

The room is at the back of the house so cooler in summer, a tiny balcony overlooks the terrace to the fields and hills. Super comfy sleigh bed, crisp white linens and stylish bathroom fittings combine to offer you a relaxed, peaceful stay.

Other rooms at the B&B are listed separately:

Free high speed Wifi, cot and baby equipment on request, no charge for under 2s.

Enjoy a generous breakfast (7 euros) of local produce. Dinner is served every evening, in summer by the church or on the candlelit terrace. Nick's food has great reviews, traditional French home cooking with a fine dining twist. Nicolas is cordon bleu trained and can accommodate special diets including dairy & gluten free.

Surrounded by wildflower meadows, mountains and lakes, the walking, cycling, mountain biking, bird watching, all from the back door, is fabulous. We offer cyclist friendly accommodation, bike hire is available locally, we have maps to lend and can advise on routes. Wild swimming in the lakes and river is a treat. Explore ruined Cathar castles on rocky outcrops, vineyards, medieval towns and villages, farmers markets, prehistoric caves. The butterfly farm and dinosaur museum and great for kids. Some lovely, family orientated ski resorts are about 40mins.

Carcassonne is our nearest airport (60km) an easy drive along roads that are quiet even in August. Toulouse 1.5hrs and Perpignan just a bit further. Car hire from Carcassonne, Toulouse and Perpignan airports

We are just off the A61 motorway, junction 22 Bram onto the scenic D16 close to Andorra (110km) and the Spanish border, Barcelona 275km. The nearest train station is Limoux (26km). Mirepoix with its fabulous weekly market is 10 minutes away, Cathar towns of Puivert, Montsegur, Foix and Fanjeaux all close by.

Guest access

Lots of lovely outdoor spaces for relaxing with a book and dining. Spacious salon with wood burner in the cooler months. Dinner every evening if desired

Interaction with guests

Always available to share our intimate knowledge of the area and the best, and sometimes secret places to visit.

Other things to note

The house is 200 years old and is rambling with changes in levels so a bit of care is required. However, the elderly and very young have all managed to survive their stay!

Carolyn and Nick have been great hosts, very relaxed, but at the same time nothing is too much trouble. Great food, with Nick's own interpretation of local recipes and ingredients - I particularly liked the bruschetta! Lovely location in the square, perfect for exploration of the surrounding area.

We had such a lovely time with Carolyn and Nick at Maison Bleue, which felt more like a warm and welcoming home than a b+b. This lovely couple's hospitality is genuine and generous and we loved our evenings spent by the fire with them and other guests, enjoying delicious wines of the region and lively conversation. Our room was charming and Carolyn saw to it that we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Meanwhile, Nick went out of his way to cater to our diet requirements and impressed and inspired us with his tasty creations. We highly recommend Chez Maison Bleue - it is a wonderful base for exploring a beautiful part of the world.

To get to our summer home in Spain, it is a long long journey with a departure at 3.15am to get the first Eurotunnel train at 5.50am! We always try to drive the first part of the two-day journey the most miles. Thus when we wound our way to La Maison Bleue, it was a most welcomed sight to see Carolyn and Nick waiting outside for us. Their home was lovely and the room for us and the "girls" was large and comfortable. Very nice touches were added, such as bath gel etc, so if one was flying by my mate, Mr RyanAir, they didn't have to worry about cramming that little bit extra into their bag. We had dinner there that evening and Nick has a very deft hand in the kitchen. The meal was superb, the wine delicious, the Danish couple a delight to converse with - magic! The Languedoc-Roussillon is magnificent and I would highly recommend to anyone to stay at La Maison Bleue to start and end their journey. Thank you, Carolyn and Nick for making our overnight stay so comfortable.

We have owned our house in the South of France for 10 years during which time we have carefully restored and transformed it into comfortable, stylish accommodation that retains its long French history and character. We offer a choice of self catering in our 3 bedroom 18th century cottage or bed and breakfast accommodation. We are informal yet attentive hosts who enjoy meeting fellow travellers and making connections around the world.

Nick is cordon bleu trained but doesn’t mess with the food too much - it doesn’t need it. Vegetables are grown organically on our potager, other produce is purchased fresh and local, organic where possible. Menus reflect the seasons and the sun-drenched flavours of Languedoc washed down with some very nice Pays d’Oc wines. Please ask if you would like vegan or gluten / dairy free.

We hope to welcome you to our very French home nestling in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
