Where you’ll be

Mariposa, California, United States

/// The Town of Mariposa
Mariposa is the county seat of Mariposa County, California, United States, home to Yosemite National Park. The name "Mariposa" is Spanish for "butterfly," and the town was named this in honor of the large migrations of monarchs seen overwintering there by early explorers.

With a population is 2,200+, the town of Mariposa was founded on land that was part of an 1846 Mexican land grant to General John C. Fremont. The Mariposa Meat Market was built in 1859, and the Bogan Building was built in the 1850s.

/// Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park is in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s famed for its giant, ancient sequoia trees, and for Tunnel View, the iconic vista of towering Bridalveil Fall and the granite cliffs of El Capitan and Half Dome. In Yosemite Village are shops, restaurants, lodging, the Yosemite Museum and the Ansel Adams Gallery, with prints of the photographer’s renowned black-and-white landscapes of the area.

First protected in 1864, Yosemite National Park is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more.

/// Bass Lake
Beautiful Bass Lake is situated in the Sierra National Forest approximately 14 mi (23 km) from the south entrance of Yosemite National Park. Established in 1895 as Bass Lake Village, the community grew up around the newly created Bass Lake Reservoir that supplied the first hydroelectric generating project in Central California. Much of the community and the reservoir is devoted to the tourism industry. The original post office at Bass Lake opened in 1912. The population was 527 at the 2010 census.
