In the heart of the countryside near Modena, in the village of Campazzo, the Bed and Breakfast “Rifugio d’Autore” is a 19th village school, carefully and lovingly restored with a mind to maintaining all its original features intact. This charming place will delight and intrigue the curious visitor who will be immersed in its own unique atmosphere as soon as they arrive.
Situated on the upper floor of the house, the rooms are particularly relaxing and inviting, thanks to the carefully chosen colour schemes. The “Grand Tour” Room and the Fantasy Suite both have ensuite bathrooms with shower, hairdryer, toiletries and luxury towels, flat-screen TV, air-conditioning and safe. The Novelty Room has a private bathroom situated on the ground floor and all the amenities of the other rooms.
In the communal areas, guests have all-day access to a comfortable and spacious lounge with a central fireplace and a reading area with chaise-longue and soft lighting. The buffet breakfast, consisting of homemade cakes and biscuits and local specialities, is served here while tea and coffee-making facilities are always available for our guests.
Complimentary bicycles, a barbecue, sun-loungers and a bench are available for the use of our guests in the garden and in the nearby outdoor relaxation area, a short distance from the B&B.
In the warmer months, guests can also have breakfast and snacks in the shade of mature trees in the delightful garden, home to the restored blacksmith’s smithy which, in bygone years, was a convenient stop for carriages when horses needed to be shod.
In the 19th century, the B&B was a village school which catered for children from the ages of six to eight from nearby Nonantola and neighbouring villages; those who wished to continue their education had to move to a boarding school in a large town or city. During the restoration work, some of the older residents of Campazzo recalled that every classroom was heated by an open fire or a wood-burning stove and that the older pupils would go into the field to collect wood. All the original fireplaces and stoves were maintained during the restoration work.
The Bed and Breakfast Rifugio d’Autore is situated strategically in the heart of the Emilian countryside just outside Nonantola, home of the famous Benedictine Abbey, and a short distance from Modena, an important Emilian town and birthplace of Luciano Pavarotti. It is therefore the perfect starting point for a visit to places of artistic, cultural and historical interest in the region. Modena is just 8 km away, Bologna, 38 km and Ferrara, 58 km and visits can easily be made to small villages and farms with their own acetaia, where the traditional balsamic vinegar is made, and for which Modena and its area is renowned world-wide. Visits can also be made to the family’s own 30-year old acetaia, by arrangement.
