The space
Firetail Bush Retreat is named in honour of one of the many bird species here - "Beautiful Firetails." It is a fully self-contained cottage which includes a large lounge and sunny king size bedroom (overlooking the surrounding hills). It has a cosy log fire, large parking area, private deck off the bedroom, outdoor BBQ, TV and ipod dock, books and magazines, movies and games, WiFi internet access and your own kitchen and bathroom. Couples and singles only - we do not accommodate babies, children, pets or additional guests sorry.

Sip a glass of Tassie pinot noir fireside or on your private deck, listen to the owls, watch the wildlife bounce past and count the stars. You have your own private entrance which is accessed via stairs off the carpark.

The listing is on 6 acres of bush, with abundant wildlife and your rustic but very comfortable cottage is built to a traditional Aussie bush theme (stone, iron and wood). The bathroom has a shower over the bath, toilet, vanity and a washing machine.

There are various options if your prefer to eat out, including pub meals at the Oyster Cove Marina (bookings suggested during Covid19, no meals on Sunday nights), Bruny Island Gateway Cafe at the ferry terminal, Steamhouse Cafe, or go to the local sheep cheesery (Grandvewe) and cook yourselves up a storm in the fully equipped kitchen (basic condiments provided - salt/pepper/milk/oil, etc). Alternatively it's only 10mins drive south to the award winning Peppermint Bay for drinks/meals on the waterfront in nearby Woodbridge (check hours). The townships of Kingston, Cygnet and Huonville are only a short drive and there is also a local store with basic groceries and fuel at the end of our road and a small grocer at oyster cove (typically open until around 7pm). Kettering is rural however (ie. no supermarkets) so be sure to pick up your supplies on your way down. There is an IGA supermarket at Snug and Kingston has several large supermarkets.

Firetail is situated in the hills of Kettering, 35mins south of Hobart down the D'Entrecasteux Channel and about 2kms off the main Channel Hwy (where there is a bus stop taking you into Hobart. It is a pleasant but longish walk from the house). Kettering is what you might call comfortable bush living, with a large marina down the road and is the jumping off point for gourmet and beach travelling on Bruny Island.

Golfing guests with your own clubs - there is a very well maintained and scenic (overlooking North West Bay) 18 hole golf course only 15 mins drive away. For public access times check with North West Bay Golf Club.

Whilst keen to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable stay, your privacy is respected so will leave you to your own devices unless you reach out … in which case you’ll likely meet Sonia and Jack, the great dane. The property is about 2kms off the main road in Kettering, where you will find the ferry to beautiful Bruny Island (for foodies: think oysters, whiskey, Australia's most southerly vineyard, award winning cheese … and deserted beaches). Kettering itself also has a few cafes, the pub overlooking the marina and the best chocolate shop - don't miss out on Nutpatch if you're visiting. Look forward to meeting you somewhere out there in AirBNB land ….
