Quaint old 1-story row house, 1LDK, with small private garden, around a 15-minute walk from JR Emmachi or Uzumasa Tenjingawa subway. Fiber LAN & Wifi. Quiet, traditional neighborhood. Peaceful retreat in beautiful historic Kyoto. Bicycles provided.

The space
Quiet and relaxing space. All of the rooms can be separated by doors, and are spacious, making it convenient to house a group with multiple guests more privately. The house has a 4 guest maximum occupancy, with 1 queen size western style bed in the bedroom and 2 single Japanese futon sets (dependent on number of guests booked) available for setting in the main room. This is an old Japanese house, in a quiet old neighborhood, simple and charming. It is comfortable for those not seeking luxury or a modern environment, and for those who prefer something quirky to something smooth and polished. Because it is an older house, with attached garden, it is sometimes difficult to keep all of nature outside--we have repellents on hand, but you may see some insects. Please be warned: It can be a bit cold and difficult to heat thoroughly during the winter months, as well as the opposite during the summer, especially in the outdoor areas. The toilet and bath areas for this listing are both located outside the main house, adjacent to the private garden. There is one air conditioning/heating unit installed in the living room, and another air conditioning/heating unit installed in the bedroom. There is also a new gas heater installed in the central dining area.

Where you’ll be

Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan

Serene and charming, this is an old quiet neighborhood with a few families and many elderly residents. There is a nearby local kindergarten, from which children's singing and recitations can often be heard. This is not the best location for evenings out on the town or for shopping at higher-end retail venues. However, there are some nice second-hand stores with ceramic items for sale (see guidebook on this listing) and some inexpensive restaurants in the area. The nearest supermarket and shopping center is around a 7-minute walk from the house, and there is a very good bakery/cafe within a 2 or 3-minute walk. The nearest train stations are at least a 15 minute walk from the house. The house is within sight of the back wall of Kyoto Yasui Kindergarten. Please check carefully before booking, to ensure that you will be happy with the location.
As for sightseeing opportunities, this house is located in Uzumasa, the home of the Tōei Uzumasa Eigamura studios and the center of Japan's television and film industries. Other interesting places in the area: Arashiyama, a hill famed for its maple leaves and the Togetsu-kyō, the Bridge to the Moon;
Ninna-ji, a Buddhist temple with a fine pagoda;
Ryōan-ji, the Zen Buddhist temple with the karesansui (dry-landscape, i.e. raked stones) garden; Tenryū-ji,the head temple of the Tenryū branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism; Sagano, a neighborhood with many temples, including the Nonomiya Shrine as well as Rakushi-sha, the Fallen Persimmon Hut. A ten-minute bike ride from Kitano Tenmangu shrine, where a large flea market is held monthly on the 25th.

During your stay

As needed :-) I am a native English speaker, with some Japanese ability, living nearby. I'm happy to provide information about the area, but I am also a teacher and busy animal welfare enthusiast, so prefer more independent travelers. Volunteers for our animal welfare group (and assisting with the guesthouses) stay in a house very nearby. They will be helping at check-in, and are often available to help or advise.
