The space

DORMITORY: Perfect for single backpackers, student groups or family holiday travelers. There's 3 double bunk beds (a total of 6 single beds) in a large shared coed room w/ table. Inside toilet, locks & lockers, hot rainwater (outside) shower, clean white linens, veranda, free drinking water, WiFi, ceiling & floor fans. The dorm is on a Maya ruin, surrounded by rain forest, waterfalls, trails & wildlife.

Unlike other jungle lodges, Lower Dover is accessible by bus! Enjoy our rain forest trails, learn about medicinal plants, explore ON-SITE Maya city (in 900 AD = est. pop 5K-10K), swim in streams surrounding the conservation area & dine from our sustainable farm. Public refrig, DIY & concierge tours, billiards, travel library.

Optional family style meals means we eat with our guests. We offer 1-2 hr tours of the Maya ruins & rain forest conservation area. We arrange tours (ATM Cave, Tikal, Cave Tube, Horseback, Canoe, Bird, Zipline) & low budget DIY adventures too.

The immediate neighborhood is deep rain forest JUNGLE! WE are the neighbors to the wildlife. Lower Dover's 100 acre lodge has creeks & a river as boundaries. There are unexcavated Maya ruins just outside your door. The closest human neighbor & village food is a 15 minute walk away. You will love the variety of local food offered in our village. Guatemalan, Belizean Creole, Thai & Italian families sell terrific food if you wish to opt out of family dining at Lower Dover.

Public bus travel is a bargain at $3usd 1-way to San Ignacio or Belmopan (45 min each way). Taxi is $20 one-way (20 min). BZE airport or Belize City water taxi door-to-door shuttle is approx $60usd per person. Expect overcrowded buses on Saturdays, express buses do not stop in Unitedville & take a taxi if you travel at night. Check out our blog for bus schedules & driving directions to/from Lower Dover & San Ignacio, Belmopan, Hopkins, Placencia, Belize City, BZE international airport, Tikal & Flores (Guatemala). The blog is a work in progress so if there's missing directions then email us.

Like us, tour operators like to get paid in CASH so bring extra. Also bring an extra pair of socks & closed toe shoes if you are going to the ATM Cave. There are 6 loving watch dogs so if you are strictly a cat person then don't stay here. Light sleeper? Bring earplugs & eye shades since our sustainable farm animals & jungle wildlife outside your door are early risers!

House Rules

I'd like to give a glowing review, but I can't. Things are well-run and tidy, so it's not really about the facilities of Lower Dover. My first issue was that Unitedville, although along the main highway, is basically nowhere. It isn't too far from some tourists spots (most nota…

Response from Lower Dover:
I thank Mr. Stunt for educating future guests that: a) You CAN travel to Lower Dover by bus from Belize City ($4usd per person) It's true that bus travel during peak Christmas week is difficult but that's the case everywhere in Belize. Christmas & Boxing Day are national holidays and Sundays have reduced bus schedules & all shops are closed. Travel to San Ignacio is about 30 minutes away ($2usd by bus - $20usd by taxi). b) Lower Dover is in the JUNGLE, near the ATM Cave, not in the urban city where the major tour offices are. We want guests who want to swim in creeks and see huge trees, hike nature trails and see toucans. If you wish night life & shopping malls then our sleepy village of Unitedville is not for you. c) The Maya ruins at Lower Dover are newly discovered & are still being excavated (still mostly mounds). We recommend you participate in the 2 hr group tour (Mr. Stunt did not) so as to learn about the Mayas who beat the odds & survived the collapse at 900AD. d) $18usd for a dorm bed during the PEAK tourist week of the year is a deal. He booked a DORM bed. Want quiet & your own space? Reserve private cabana (see the AQUA cabana at Lower Dover on AirBNB). No where do we state that additional guests are no charge when staying in a dorm. There is a 9% government tax on all lodging beds in Belize. Mr. Stunt paid what was stated on AirBNB for his lodging. His invoice itemized his lodging and all taxes and did not exceed the AirBNB price (ie no hidden fees)

NEAR... YET TOTALLY FAR OUT! Ranked #1 Specialty lodge in western Belize by TripAdvisor! Lower Dover is close to the famous ATM Cave & a 15 min walk from a busy public bus stop in Unitedville yet you'll feel like you are on a secluded jungle isle surrounded by rivers. You'll be…
