On the beach

This home is right on Nine Mile Beach.

(Edit 22/12/25: Unfortunately we were affected by the recent fire. Our block was burned, but the Lighthouse was saved. The surrounding bush has been lost, but is regenerating fast. See photos. We have accordingly reduced our price until May)

We think our architectural house is a perfect romantic getaway. We built it for the view, so you can relax with a coffee/wine and enjoy the best of Tasmania's east coast. Stroll along the deserted beach & read or listen to our record collection by the fire.

The space
Private bush and beach setting. Very new architecturally designed one bedroom house. This is a quiet, 'non-touristy' area, but in view of Tasmania's East Coast icons. The beach is really long and it's often hard to spot others enjoying it.

Fully self contained. All linen provided.
The kitchen has a quality oven, rangehood, fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle, pots, pans, cutlery and crockery etc, etc. No dishwasher I'm afraid. The bathroom has a big shower area, efficient flush toilet (on a septic system).
There is no laundry. But there's a laundromat in Swansea, ten minutes away.
We're on tank water, so there's no spa, and water isn't unlimited (10,000L for domestic plus 10,000L reserved for fire).
There is a wood heater and plenty of wood if the weather turns nasty, but this is a warm house, so it's very unlikely you'll need it in the warmer months.
There's a renovated record player and a library of records.

Key collectable from key-safe at gate. We'll advise the code and give other introductory detail the day before you arrive.
At times we'll be staying nearby and will be available to show guests the property.

Very quiet area. Five acre lots with non permanent residents. The beach is often completely empty (all nine miles). Beautiful, abundant bird and wildlife. Open up the big sliders in the morning and listen to the amazing birdlife.
Occasionally we see a snake in warmer months, so keep a watch out when you're on the beach track.
You can catch flathead off the beach, if you're patient. A kayak will improve your chances.
The beach faces due south and catches a consistent swell. It can be really fun to body surf, and occasionally it's wild. You need to be careful with very small children or non-proficient swimmers. But there are safe places for littleuns to swim nearby.
From 'the Lighthouse' you are close (45 min) to iconic Coles Bay and Freycinet, and Maria Island ferry service (50min). We won't try to list all the east coast attractions here.
Things to do at our place though, include: everything that might involve the view, and coffee and reading and games and music; beach walks or rides; swimming and body surfing; fishing; sailing. Visit yellowbanks on the lagoon, or the mouth of the lagoon where many people fish and swim, and the pelicans and waterbirds are amazing.

Unfortunately we’re not equipped for wheel-chairs. Both external entrances require you to scale stairs.

There is a caravan on the lower quarter of this five acre block, obscured by bush. Often we will be using this caravan but our guests in the lighthouse will have complete privacy. Guests have a separate track to the beach.

We're on tank water, so there's no spa, and water isn't unlimited. But we haven't needed be overly careful in the past, to get through the summer with our tanks (10,000L for domestic plus 10,000L reserved for fire). We use water more or less as if we were on the town supply.

Fun fact: Love picking fresh herbs from my garden
Most useless skill: Remembering number plates
we are both in our latter years i guess (more than 40 (quite a bit), less than 60!). we have three grown up kids: an architect, a nurse, an electrician. We're family people. Our kids still have a nan and a Pa, both still active and tuned in, and a whole bunch of aunties and uncles and cousins. we're both teachers, but haven't always been. when we don't have guests, I think our favourite place in the world to be is at the Lighthouse, pottering around in the garden, or walking the dog on the beach, or just loving it. And in recent years, a lot of our spare time has gone into the building of this place. But we also travel. We were in Africa a few years ago. Spain and Italy recently. and more on the horizons I suspect!
