This beautiful quaint church is situated in Otekaieke in the stunning Waitaki Valley. This accommodation has been tastefully converted to provide a warm and spacious retreat for one or two couples. Breakfast in the sunshine on the verandah overlooking farmland, the river valley and the Campbell Hills.
This quiet and peaceful setting is situated only 35mins drive from the Victorian township of Oamaru.

The space
A beautiful and tranquil church conversion that accommodates a one or two couple stay, where you have the entire property to yourself.

This historic and spacious little church built in around 1945 sits not far from our old schoolhouse and headmaster’s quarters which dates back to 1908.
It was originally the Church of the Good Shepherd, a Presbyterian church built to serve the local community.

Our properties overlook fertile farmland, hazelnut groves, fruit orchards and the expansive Campbell Hills and St Mary ranges.
We welcome our guests to wander up to the Old School and walk amongst the hazelnut grove and woodlot and interact with our free range hens, Tamworth pigs and Wiltshire sheep.

Where you’ll be

Otekaieke, Canterbury, New Zealand

The expansiveness of this big country with the combination of hills, trees, water and birdlife make this an incredibly special area. Nearby Kurow boasts a lovely little museum, great cafes and a little grocery store to pick up any supplies you may need.
You may also like to experience country hospitality in either of the local Pubs in Kurow or Duntroon.
Not only is it a great place for you to stop, smell the flowers and  listen to the birdsong, it’s one  where you can relax with a good book and a glass of good quality wine - grown, pressed and bottled by our neighboring Kurow Village Vineyards.

For the more adventurous, the Alps to the Ocean Cycle Trail is at your doorstep, as is the Waitaki River for those who have come to angle, cast a fly or spin during the salmon and trout seasons.  Higher up, the mountain scapes entice the avid climber and the day tramper to pack a lunch and explore.

Steeped in its deep Scottish Gaelic history, neighbouring Duntroon, proudly showcases its working Blacksmith shop; ancient archeological sites, elephant rocks and limestone-cliff formations.

Oamaru victoriously welcomes you to join their Victorian precinct. Step back in time and see the artisans practice their traditional skills all whilst dressed in the costume of the day.  The annual Victorian Heritage celebrations held in early November is an experience not to be missed where locals and visitors enjoy a range of events spread over a one week period, ranging from historic walks, oratories of written works of literature, dances, penny farthing races and a magnificent street parades in full period costumes. Oamaru is also the home of Steampunk with the Steampunk HQ showcasing a Victorian quirky sci-fi experience.

A 2-3 day itinerary could take you visiting Lakes Aviemore, Benmore and Waitaki to picnic, a coastal visit to watch or partake in the surfing at Kakanui and a visit to Moeraki, here you can wander the beach and see the the iconic boulders, the blue penguins and enjoy the freshly caught seafood for lunch on the beach.
Omarama is a 50min drive inland, here you can spend and evening at the Hot tubs stargazing, another unique experience to add to your stay.

I live in Otekaieke with my partner Dave and together we have an Old School on just over 4ha and an Old Church just 300m away. We fell in love with this area 2 years ago while travelling around exploring parts of New Zealand we hadn't seen before. We have 1500 hazelnut trees on our property, walnuts and fruiting trees. We aim to live as sustainably as possible as we feel so privileged to be living in this beautiful place. We love to be able to share our wee slice of paradise with others.
