This warm, cosy, self contained cedar cottage is for a couple and can include a child or infant. Tranquility is the key. The only noise is natures chorus of birdsong. Indoor, outdoor living enhances the style we are trying to offer. Winter rates.

The space

The cottage is a single room with kitchen and bedroom combined with a separate bathroom. There is an attached patio with the bush and fruit trees around. The music from native birds is a symphony of nature. We live with solar electricity and solar hot water. Because of our eco systems we can't supply laundry facilities but there is a public laundry close by.

Guest access

We are 2.5 kms fom the port of Opua and 6 kilometres from Pahia. This area is a world recognized islands, beach and maritime attraction. Many sailors from around the world make this their haven

Interaction with guests

We are semi retired mariners who have sailed the world and now live in paradise. We know our beautiful area intimately and can give experienced guidance to travelers to maximize their stay in this warm, friendly part of clean, green New Zealand.

Other things to note

Our area is a renowned international tourist destination and the Bay of Islands has many stunning attractions to be seen by air, by yacht, by boat, by foot. There are many sea and bush walks and treks around here. Cycle trails abound and villages with art, pottery and boutique shops galore. If one likes adventure you can skydive, para sail, water ski, jet boat and surf.

Just like being at home. Books to read, everything you need in the kitchen. Michelle was very helpful in suggesting places to visit etc.

Russell & Mitch were wonderfully welcoming and we enjoyed a meal with them (thank you!) on night 1 with interesting & engaging conversation. Russell is a bundle of energy with so many stories to tell and so many ideas of projects yet to be finalised. Good luck, good health and our best to you both.

Russell was very welcoming and ensured our stay was as comfortable as possible. He gave us valuable local information about tourist sights, eateries and travel. Very friendly and generous with his time.

Russell's place is secluded and close to nature. It is a self sufficient building and Russell kindly provided a few things for us to cook breakfast. He's a true local and has great suggestions for what to do.

Welcomed first by the lovely poppy a sweet sweet dog that loves cuddles and than by Russel's very helpful and kind son (Russel was off sailing, enjoying the good life :)). Had a very relaxed stay, it is very quiet, but only a short ride off the main street. All kinds of food goodies were provided, very kind! The unit is simple and charming, set in the garden of the main house, completely separate and private. Would recommend it.

Russell is a fantastic host with so much knowledge about the area that he is more than willing to share. We arrived with fresh food from the garden. The small cottage is one room with an attached bathroom. It is very cute but quite small. The bed has a mosquito net and during summer it is mandatory. The property is very secluded and this stay was truly a bush retreat. Not many luxuries but a great experience with a great host nonetheless.

Russell was a fantastic host, and we loved experiencing an eco lifestyle at out accommodation. Russell's ship building skills have clearly come in handy with a very economical and clever layout. We also found the property a great base for exploring Waitangi, Russell and beyond.

I am a retired mariner. I have sailed the world in a sailing ship I built myself. I have lived an amazing life and like to share stories and meet other travelers. My partner Michelle is also a sailor and chef. We live in a solar powered cottage we built ourselves and can accommodate travelers in the cedar cottage adjacent to our own. Our lifestyle is simple and we hope environmentally sensible.
