Less than an hour from Sydney, this romantic and secluded boathouse is nestled on the edge of the Ku Ring Gai National Park among spotted gums and mangroves. It’s on the foreshore of Ventnor, the original homestead of Pittwater.

Ventnor was built by the Oliver Family in 1862 on land traditionally owned by the Guringai people. Its the oldest house in Sydney, north of Manly.

The space
The Boathouse comfortably sleeps 4 in 2 seperate (but identical) queen sized lofts at either end of the boatshed. Each loft is accessed by a fold-down ladder with a handrail.

The kitchen has all the essential equipment you need, including a decent coffee machine, 4 plate electric hob, small combo electric oven and microwave plus a very large fridge / freezer. Long lunches and cosy dinners are celebrated here. There’s a large outdoor woodfired oven and a gas BBQ. We tend to cook everything in the woodfired oven from roasts, mussels and whole fish, to steaks, seasonal vegetables and pizza (it gets to 600 degrees in 30 mins).

The furniture is all custom made by Greg Hatton. This includes the zinc top dining table with birch legs, the willow reed stools, the coffee table that houses our coral collection, as well as the couch with Jac + Jack cashmere blankets.

The artwork, antique silver, crystal decanters and tribal artefacts have all been collected on our travels over the years. The ceramics in the kitchen are by Samantha Robinson.

The Boathouse has a large sandstone patio for entertaining, sun loungers, an outdoor fire pit, and plenty of space to relax and enjoy absolute waterfront living.

For the adventurous, there is a modest hour long walk up the track behind the Boathouse to a relatively unknown site in the National Park where there are incredible rock carvings by the Guringai, that have been carbon dated to more than 20,000 years old.

There are charming waterfalls and rockpools to swim in less than a 15 minute walk from the Boathouse. There are kayaks and a SUP to help get you to the hidden bays and remote beaches of Pittwater. You can swim or snorkel off the sandy beach. Fishing is plentiful. Boat charters are also available nearby.

Here you can choose to immerse yourself in all that nature has to offer or retreat to a cosy nook with wine, cheese and lose yourself in a good book, backgammon or a game of cards.

While the moon and tides guide the phases of the day, its the early morning sound of the kookaburras who will remind you exactly who’s in charge.

Unfortunately the property isn’t suitable for small children or mobility impaired adults. Because the property borders the national park and is frequently visited by wallabies and other wildlife, sadly we can’t accept pets.

Guest access
The Boathouse and sandstone patio along 40m of waterfront on Elvina Bay are all your exclusive domain for the duration of your stay.

Other things to note
Please note that the property is accessed by boat only. Accordingly, you’ll need to access the property either by:
- the Ferry Service ($8 pp) (churchpointferrtservice.com) which leaves Church Point every hour on the half hour from 6.30am to 7.30pm - get off at Elvina Bay north and the Boathouse is a 5 minute walk;
- water taxi from Church Point (pink taxi / $27) direct to our jetty;
- sea plane from Rose Bay (we’ll pick you up from the sea plane in our boat; the plane will be able to land in Pittwater on the western side of Scotland Island opposite the headland of Elvina and Lovett Bays).

You’ll need to remove your rubbish at the end of the trip - there are bins at Elvina Bay North ferry terminal (200m away).

Our water comes from an underground spring (which it has done for the past 160 years) and so we are very conscious of its consumption. While we also collect our own rainwater, it’s something we encourage our guests to be mindful of.

There is no TV. But there is wi-fi and full network access. The Boathouse is a place to escape from all the devices that connect you to the rest of the world and completely unplug. This is where phone-free holidays are encouraged. Where the process of slow-food, leisurely swims, long-bush walks or falling asleep mid-page-turn are encouraged. We hope that after your time here you will feel relaxed, recharged and your soul well nourished.
