Neighbourhood highlights

The Croix-Rousse neighborhood has retained a special soul, a village-like feel, different from the rest of the city. It descends from the Croix-Rousse plateau, in alleys, gardens, terraces and sloping streets to Place des Terreaux and the Hôtel de Ville/Opéra. Due to its steep incline, the Lyonnais named the neighborhood "Les Pentes" (The Slopes).
There are art galleries, concept stores, creators and artisans of art, café-bookstores… You still have to get lost in the streets and small squares with imperfect curves. It is now a trendy and lively neighborhood, with many bars and restaurants that revisit the spirit of Lyon's bouchons. It is composed of two parts: the slopes, the old "canut" district, and the plateau, traditionally more residential with one of the most beautiful markets in the City of Lyon which extends over Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse.
This neighborhood was inhabited very early, as evidenced by the Trois-Gaules amphitheater. The history of the Croix-Rousse was then marked by the building of convents, which were destroyed during the Revolution. Interest in the neighborhood was reborn with the appearance of the Jacquard loom in 1800, which required high-ceilinged workshops. The silk workers (the Canuts) left Old Lyon to settle on the slopes, where new buildings were built.
