The Huon Burrow is a unique underground dwelling nestled into the hillside with amazing views over the Huon River within easy walking distance of cafes and restaurants at historic Franklin in the Huon Valley.
The Huon Burrow has half a metre of material on the roof composed of soil, gravel and insulation on top of a waterproof barrier, then 20 tons of concrete and one ton of reinforced steel.

The space
Being buried into the hillside, buttressed with amazing stonework, the dwelling has relatively stable temperatures throughout the year requiring little to heat or cool. The patio is enclosed in cooler months with cafe blinds, and the chiminea provides extra cosy warmth. It is fully self-contained with a full kitchen and washing machine. We provide breakfast provisions, fresh milk, and fruit in season and are well-based to explore further south and throughout the Huon Valley, famous for its walking trails, vineyards, and fruit growing.

The dwelling is self-contained with its own entrance. You can park in the carport. EVs can recharge overnight. There is ample turnaround space and parking for larger vehicles.

It's situated within easy walking distance of many cafes and restaurants so foodies will be surprised at the amazing foods available, from Cinnamon and Cherry's Turkish bakery to Café Franklin's freshly made pastries situated in the hub of Franklin, the Post Office, where you can even have a hair cut as well! There are many other great eateries to discover here in this little village.
If you have children here there is a great children's playground at the river park near Osteria restaurant.
Another very different playground with a zip line is at Geevston, about 15 minutes south of Franklin near the tourist centre in the old town hall.
The Huon Valley is a drawcard for bushwalkers and the pristine beaches such as those at Southport and Cockle Creek are an example of the natural beauty that is Tasmania.
