Gucumatz is a lovely, comfortable home situated on the northern shore of lake Petén Itzá. The lake water is clean, warm and inviting and an absolute delight for year-round swimming.
We have a couple of kayaks available for guests to use and some lounger chairs and hammocks. Please take care when entering the water as rocks and steps may be slippery.
We have a beautiful tropical garden full of local plants and are surrounded by jungle making this an ideal spot for birders.

The space
Just 41 kms from the magnificent Mayan ruins of Tikal, Gucumatz enjoys an extremely safe and secluded location on the shore of Lake Petén Itzá surrounded by rich jungle vegetation. It has a beautiful private garden filled with tropical plants.

Guest access
We have a private, secluded beach area with hammocks and hanging beds, ideal for reading and relaxing. Swimming and kayaking are, definitely, a must on this magnificent lake.
We have a large sitting/dining room with reading material and a games room with a large variety of table games, darts, billiards and ping-pong.
Guests will have the perfect opportunity to take Spanish classes and put their existing knowledge into practice during their stay here.
For those more adventurous travelers a horse riding excursion, to the protected Bio Itzá area, can easily be arranged with a local guide. For the more homely there are cookery classes learning, from scratch, how to make some of the delicious local dishes, on an open fire with local cooks.

Other things to note
We cater, not only for couples and individuals, but also offer a special price, for small groups (10-15 people) who wish to occupy the complete house.
We provide a full Guatelamalan (chapín) breakfast for Q40 from 7.30 a.m. to 9.30 a.m.
Dinner is available, in the evening, al 7 p.m. but must be ordered no later than 10 a.m. The price for dinner is Q100.
For groups, occupying the complete facility, there is a guest kitchen with refrigerator, cooker, microwave and the necessary crockery and cutlery. Please remember, though, to bring everything you will need in the way of food with you as the nearest village, San Pedro (800 mts.) has no supermarket and shops there offer only the very minimum.
Cold sodas (Q8) and beers (Q15) are available from our fridge/bar at all times.

San Pedro is our nearest village (700 mts). Inhabitants there are both Spanish speaking and Quecchí origen. Guest will be more than welcome to take part in any ongoing community programme during their stay. If you would like to share your skills, be they hobbies (music, handcrafts, etc.) or those of a more professional nature or if you have a programme of your own you’d like to put into practice here, please let us know in advance so that we can make all the necessary preparations. Children love to sing and paint and are especially affectionate and open. Medical and dental work is, as always, particularly needed.Neighbours from the nearby village of San Pedro are friendly and helpful and always willing to receive foreigners so you will find sharing your skills to be deeply rewarding here.

I´m a retired teacher. British by birth, Spanish by nationality where I spent 34 wonderful years of my life. Now I live quietly by a beautiful lake in northern Guatemala trying to lend a hand in the near by village and share my beautiful home with whoever would like to come and visit me. I enjoy nature, reading, music and healthy outdoor life in general. I have an ecological garden and try to be as self-sufficient as possible. I´m a member of the Tikal Rotary Club, working towards a better Petén.
