The space
Your separate 50m2 suite (not huge but cute!) is set in a rare Byron Bay one acre garden near a nature reserve & Nat Park.
Here is what’s on offer-
• A lounge/study/eclectic library with large window overlooking gardens. We have had a number of creatives working on their new book and scripts.
• A bedroom with own walled jungle garden, green-speckled cat birds visiting.
• A bright kitchenette and dining area to hang in with views on patio & tree collection.
• An ordinary bathroom but with shower and bath. Some rénovations.
• A separate toilet with the convenience of a Japanese warm water bidet, with warm water jets, & heated seat temperature.
• Access to a partitioned NBN at 47 mbps Wifi with booster in your suite.
• A dedicated shaded car space off the circular driveway.
• A very quiet new aircon in bedroom.
• Original artwork by Jude - watercolours, inks and murals.
There are plenty of private lawns & paths to exercise and relax. We walk an average of 8 km a day just potting around. Plenty of space.
The suite is under the same roof as our home but there is sound insulation between. The house sits in the middle of a unique food forest. Bird families and marsupials live here yet it is close enough to a health centre and central Byron and a stroll to our secluded 10 km long Tallow Beach.
The property is designed with an edible landscape aka Permaculture.
We share with our guests some produce from a wide range of plant species and varieties.
We accept small(ish) dogs.

THE LONG STORY:
• There is no television, just wifi.
• The whole house has non-allergenic renovations like casein wall paint, citrus oil-based wood paint and sand-coloured natural linseed oil linoleum (Marmoleum) with a cork underlay.
• Our property and the nearby paperbark reserve ecosystem are home to wallabies, echidnas, possums, bandicoots and 45 species of birds; even an emu once wandered by. Guests appreciate the ever-changing flybys and impromptu concerts. Michel often joins in with his Roumanian panpipes.
• In summer sea breezes and our food forest groves keep the dwelling noticeably cooler than Byron CBD, several degrees less in fact. But we feel warm in winter with roof insulation.
• The sound-scape is somehow soothing as the house is set back from neighbours and from street noises. The sounds are muffled by thick vegetation with 13 species of clumping bamboo and 20 clumps of 4 metre tall tiger grass. The small suburban road is 45m away. Can hear loud motorbikes but.
• Your three rooms all look out onto the gardens, to the east and south.
• Enjoy watching pure night skies and no other lights visible but for security lights on arrival at your car park and to light you to your doorstep.
• When you are in your kitchen & we are in ours, we might become aware of the sound of each other’s cooking or washing the dishes.
• The two entrances are separated by a green screen of large pot plants. One of your two windows in your kitchen has external wooden louvres for privacy. Check out our 180 photos.
• The kitchen is suited to simple cuisine with two induction stovetops also a small electric oven, full-sized fridge and a range of appliances you’d expect.
• Since 2017, we have made an orchid collection in a shadehouse next to the communal laundry.
• There is a 3 tonne sculpture in white rock of breaching Migaloo, a white humpback whale, at the bottom of the garden. See photos.
• While a number of guests have continued their work while staying in the suite, where the tranquility and natural beauty are conducive to hatching ideas and focussing the mind. We have had guests researching or writing scripts, songs and novels, and running their business remotely from the suite.
•  It can be a realistic test-run for sea/tree changers.
• Chances are you will notice us tending the Seedsavers Gardens, harvesting ingredients; we extract perfume scents by enfleurage from gardens plants, pickle olives in Jan & Feb, brew wines from garden fruit, make honey mead or vinegars etc., Jude paints, you might hear Michel on panpipes. We are not by any stretch of the mind retired. See Seed Savers' Network Wikipedia entry.
We tend to attract guests for the longer stay; but we are willing to negotiate with you as to your desired length of stay if you are looking for a sea & tree change and want to test the place and atmos before booking for a longer period. Tell us your needs and we will respond.
Before we accept your request as guests we ask you read the house rules right until the end. Thank you for doing that.

Guest access
• You have sole access to the separate guest apartment in our house.
• NBN Wifi at 48Mbps.
• You might like to enjoy meals al fresco on one of the several tables around the garden. Jude and Michel will show them to you.
• You have access to a laundry with a front loader next to the orchid house with clothesline in the sun!
• Beach towels provided.
• There is a dedicated shady space for parking your car at the edge of our circular driveway. (Drive in on the right side, park close-up to the shed.) Drive out the opposite side of the circular driveway.
Please do NOT reverse into the street as it is on an unsafe Y-junction!

Other things to note
• We follow the NSW Health Department’s Covid-19 guidelines. Please let us know that you do too.
• We also adhere to Airbnb’s special Covid-19 cleaning guidelines
• If you arrive by plane consider hiring a small car before you arrive in Byron Bay. There are many attractive coastal and inland destinations 3 to 20 km away.
. The circular driveway is 3.1 to 3.5m wide. Low rock walls on the sides.
•  We very much welcome folks of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds (we have worked with our own not-for-profit organisation The Seed Savers’ Network in over forty countries and also have a multi-cultural and multi-racial family.)
• We are marriage equalitarians and very much welcome LGBTIQ folk.
•  Although we try to respond or "Accept/Decline" each enquiry within the hour, this may take longer if we are out in the bush away from telephone towers. Please persist and apply again if 24 hours has lapsed. But we do try to get to reception area once a day.
• We accept enquiries when we are satisfied that you as a guest will have every chance to enjoy the botanical gardens location. Please let us know about yourselves: profession and reasons for your visit to Byron Bay. We accept on average only 25 bookings a year. 125 bookings in the last six years. Less is best so every guest is special.
• We vacuum insects and clean with our home-made citrus peel-infused vinegar.
•  Guests often report how well/deeply they sleep. The distant sound of pounding waves from Tallow Beach may help.
•  Mosquitoes can be a nuisance in Byron Bay area usually December to April. There are home-made organic repellents and citronella burners to keep them at bay. Pack long loose sleeves and pants for the outdoors in the evenings of these months anywhere on our coast. Light-coloured clothes repel, whereas dark colours attract mozzies.
•  We beg you to be very careful when you swim at the beach because of the rips particularly at our nearby secluded Tallow Beach 600m away and even at popular Main Beach, where you should swim between the life-savers' flags.

Location

Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia

At the edge of a green suburb, nature reserves and national park.
Our unusual acre property is located on the southern edge of Byron Bay, 2.3km from the CBD in a leafy neighbourhood that is surrounded by the disused but hidden railway reserve with patches of coastal rainforests.

It is suburban but we are not able to hear much because all but one window faces the other way: the wild patches of the nature reserve. However on the property facing the suburban street you would be aware of it and hear exceptionally noisy bikes. It feels secluded hidden within our 24 years old gardens planted by your hosts. Most of the sounds will come from J&M preparing, preserving garden produce or gardening. Your suite is surrounded by a little less than one acre of lawns and forest gardens.

Closest airport is Ballina (thirty minutes by car on pretty coastal road or shuttle bus $30); closest international airport is Gold Coast (one hour via non-pretty highway). A car will help you to access the beaut nuggets of rainforest and isolated coves incredibly beautiful like in Broken Heads 5 km away

The subtropical mild climate allows for year-round activities at nearby Main Beach via CBD, Tallow Beach and Broken Head with its rare coastal rainforest. Taylors Tea Tree Lake is ten minutes drive away. Tallow Creek mouth a short walk through the Arakwal National Park from your Suite.
Byron Bay boasts a vibrant cultural scene buzzing if not frantic with film, media, music and literature "creatives", even "glitterati" at the nearby Roadhouse Cafe & Restaurant terrace 100 m away.
150m away on the main road from Byron to Suffolk Park there is a chiropractor and a award winning garden nursery.
Heart and Soul Gym and Yoga centre is 200m toward town.
The Thursday morning Byron Farmers' Market is 5km to the north of the CBD. There is a Saturday evening craft market in the centre of town from October to April and and the first Sunday-of-the-month General Market along the seafront.
See the Guidebook for several other local attractions and dining options.
Tallow Creek estuary, with local and migrating birds, on the wild Tallow Beach is only a short walk/bike ride (600m) via a small coastal heathland track through Arakwal National Park. Everybody tries not to disturb migratory birds as this may endanger their energy reserves to fly back to the other side of the world.
From there take hours-long beach promenades to Cape Byron Lighthouse or Broken Head. Whales can be seen migrating north from June to August and returning south in September and October.
The latitude is 28.3°S.
Temperatures are mild rarely reaching over 30°C in summer and cool nights in winter and early mornings around 11 to 25°C. The large urban property is on a slight rise so you enjoy ocean breezes in Summer.

Jude and Michel have lived and gardened in Byron Bay since 1991, and been in the area since 1977. As the founders of the national Seed Savers' Network (1986) in Australia, they have obsessively sought sub tropical food plants and rare ethno-botanicals. Their one acre organic garden since 1998, right in Byron Bay, is a testimony to this passion. It has been profusely covered in the media. Their three books, one the best-selling "The Seed Savers' Handbook", their two film documentaries and their Youtube channel (over 5m views) are their legacy, with translations and voice-overs in nine languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Italian, Bulgarian, and Basque so far). They frequently travel. In between they behave like urban peasants and are passionately making perfume from their garden flora. Jude and Michel are interested in folk who have done something different in life, something green and creative, or aspire to. They have an international spread of interns who have gone on to help establish indigenous and peasant agricultural biodiversity network projects in communities and regions of 43 nations.

During your stay
The Fantons live in their half of the partitioned original 1970 solid house. They sometimes travel on impromptu campervan adventures so occasionally may not be on the property to welcome you.
As mentioned elsewhere the doors of Jude and Michel's home and your suite are just five metres apart in a garden courtyard patio under a large verandah, so each party is aware of the other. The privacy screen consists of greenery.
Should you need anything, please knock on their door or text or ring. They spend lots of time on the gardens and love to explain the Permaculture design (est. 1998) and show fully grown spice plants such as turmeric, gingers, cinnamon, pimiento tree , tamarind etc.
