Southern Tuscany. Value for money: apartment in old farmhouse in secluded farming district within short distance of historic local town. Very spacious and comfortable accommodation for two with a very comfy sofa in a private space for a third guest. Baby travel cot available. Wifi, parking. Lovely local walks/hiking in wonderful unspoilt countryside.
MINIMUM STAY 2 NIGHTS, OWN TRANSPORT ESSENTIAL. DOGS (Max 2!) WELCOME BY ARRANGEMENT AT SMALL EXTRA COST

The space
The 'Basso' was converted from old stables and storerooms on the ground floor of a typical Tuscan farmhouse and is now a tranquil, spacious, light and airy self-contained apartment. Features a delightful mixture of antique English and traditional Tuscan furnishing, a very comfortable double bed in big studio-bedroom, large kitchen-diner, and lovely bathroom with bathtub. Ideal for a couple, but a big comfy sofa in separate room will accommodate an older child or another adult. Travel cot available. French-windows open onto terrace and orchard garden with open views of the Tuscan countryside. Table and chairs for outdoor meals and fruit in season for the picking...

Guest access
Some sort of transport is essential, because the house is about 4km from the nearest shops, but there is parking immediately outside.

Guests stay beneath the owner's private apartment and have use of the shared laundry room (excellent washing machine, ironing facilities, etc) plus extra shower/WC. During the stay, the terrace is yours, although occasionally I shall need to water the orchard.
Wifi and very good mobile phone reception.
Cleaning extra on request.

Other things to note
This is a tranquil farming district where not much has changed for many years. Expect few fences round local fields, and expect my farmer-neighbours' livestock (mostly hens, geese, ducks and the odd goat) to do a bit of wandering. Our little district is quite exceptionally secure from the point of view of thieves and intruders - I very seldom bother to lock my car. However, you might wish to lock yours, and I suggest you lock the apartment at night and keep the key safely with you when you go out for the day.
We all have dogs and cats!

Location

Monte San Savino, Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy

This is the heart of southern Tuscan farming country, where traditional farming has continued for aeons, where nightingales sing and where some of the best wine and oil in the world is grown. 'Località Rigo' is a tiny farming community in the Comune di Monte San Savino, and provides an ideal base from which to explore. Monte San Savino, the local town - and the nearest shops! - is about 4km from Rigo, and has excellent road/ rail links to Arezzo, Florence, and Rome. "Monte" is worth exploring in itself - a handsome, walled medieval market town typical to the area, it was originally an ancient Etruscan settlement. During the Renaissance, it was governed by the famous Medici family. Now its handsome historic centre is surrounded by more modern expansion, where there is a branch-line railway station, regular bus-service, the bypass to Arezzo (less than 20 mins) and the main Rome/Pisa motorway (autostrada). Lucignano, with its beautifully preserved surrounding wall and some excellent restaurants is less the 15 minutes away. The ancient Castello Gargonza (mentioned by Dante in The Divine Comedy) is visible from the house! Daytrips (about an hour's distance) include Cortona and Lago Trasimeno, Pienza and Montepulciano which lie to the south, with Perugia a little further over the Umbrian border, and Assisi. Siena is also within easy reach, or explore the Chianti valley and San Gimignano and Volterra. Beyond Arezzo to the north east are wonderful mountains.

Teacher, writer. I have lived in Italy for 15 years and speak fluent Italian. I love the countryside and wildlife, and the country round here is particularly lovely.
During your stay
I am very busy teaching and writing and I assume people want to get on with their own thing. That said, I am more than happy to help and suggest, and to show longer-term guests around local shops, amenities etc. I always arrange to meet guests in town (Monte San Savino) when they first arrive because the house is difficult to find. If I am not at home for part of a guest's stay, I always leave my phone number for emergencies, and plenty of back-up info. There is a 'welcome' leaflet - introduction to the apartment, the locale and the town, and some welcome in the fridge! Lots of maps and guides in the apartment.
