We are the proud owners and caretakers of a grand old 1890s villa here on Canterbury St, located on a quiet lane in the center of Lyttelton. It is just a 5 minute walk to access the supermarket, bars, shops, restaurants, famous farmers market, public transportation, ferry to Diamond Harbour and Quail Island.
We are a friendly and easy-going couple looking forward to meeting new people and helping them enjoy their time here in the quaint port town of Lyttelton.

The space
We are passionate about the history of our town and our beautiful home, and feel that 57 Canterbury St is a unique place to stay.

The land was first developed by Samuel Gundry who arrived in Lyttelton abroad the ‘Steadfast’ arriving in Lyttelton in June 1 8 5 1.
The first and remaining dwelling was built in July Nineteen hundred and four by Albert Thomas Mutton. Thomas was known as the Carpenter of London St and went on to own 6 properties in Lyttelton. He built houses and sold them on easy terms and kept a grocery store as well. He also built a school and houses in nearby Rapaki for the local iwi.

Thomas his wife Ruby and three sons William, James and Thomas resided at this address for some years after it was built up until Nineteen Nineteen according to the Electoral roll.

In the 10 years I have lived at this beautiful property, I have along with the help of my husband created rambling gardens producing organic veggies and with 7 voluptuous chickens have a bountiful supply of free range eggs. We have more than our family can consume and would like to share our spoils with our guests offering breakfast for extra $12pp on weekends. There will be a selection of breads to go with your choice of eggs, garden greens, toasted nuts & seeds and homemade condiments plus coffee or tea.

In summer we host an online ‘road side stall’ selling fresh produce and condiments grown and made right here with all proceeds going back into the land and maintenance of this grand old girl on Canterbury St that has stood strong for over 100 years.

We also have 3 very friendly cats who love a cuddle or 10 and often sit on the mailbox awaiting friends who will pat them and there human mum who will feed them :)

Guest access
We have 2 separate rooms available, one with 2 king single beds and 1 x King size bedroom across the hall (this listing is for 1 room only with 2 x King Single Beds), Alternatively both rooms can be booked for a family of four so please check availability of our second listing if you require both rooms at the same time.

Both rooms can be accessed by a private front entrance, with a shared bathroom at the end of the hall. We don't mind sharing our kitchen with guests who chose to bring their own food.
