“About Chris”: This is the third time that life has afforded me residence in the Hawaiian Islands. Once as an army brat in the 1970's, then as an adventure traveler where I lived in a 20ft shipping container at a camp for kids on the north shore of Oahu in the mid 90's and finally the Big Island earlier this year. I made plans to move from Oahu to the Big Island in the mid 90s but those plans were put on the back burner when I founded a wholesale import furniture company called Groovystuff. I used to think that my role in Groovystuff was all that I ever was and would be in life…. I used to believe who I was as a person was defined through my work as an artist and entrepreneur with Groovystuff….but then I realized that the gifts of life are borrowed time, and dreams are meant to be realized. As a graduate of Texas A&M University, Class of 90, I worked in the corporate world for five years and quickly became disenchanted with the engineering fields I had chosen after graduation. This brought me face to face with a serious crossroad in my life. I chose to abandon the life of corporate America and instead I chose to follow my childhood ambition to travel internationally. I trashed my suits and ties, stopped cutting my hair, and tackled the next chapter in life by purchasing a one way ticket to Bangkok, Thailand. I spent several years traveling the Pacific region through Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia…., worked on dive boats in Australia, and even endured a stinging cold of a year in Christchurch, New Zealand working at a wine bar. Just when I thought I was safe, secure and far enough away from the life of corporate America, a college friend invited me to join him and his wife in their home decor and jewelry import business out of Bali, Thailand and Nepal. While in Thailand on my first buying trip I stumbled across a cottage industry of manufacturers who were making “Western-Styled” wagon wheel furniture from obsolete Teak-Wood farm carts no longer in use due to industrialization and the introduction of tractors and trucks….. Groovystuff was born on that day, and the world completely opened up for me as an artist, entrepreneur, and educator. For the past 20 years, life has gifted me with travel, trade, artistic design and even allowed me to find a way to give back to my community with the creation of a non-profit foundation that bridges the gap between education & industry for the residential home furnishing market and the universities that service that market segment. So I call this move back to Hawaii the “next chapter” with all the faith, adventure, passion, and positive outlook for a home on the Islands with a garden in the backyard, Indian Motorcycle in the garage and the love of a good woman by my side to share the gravy days!!!! I did something right to have earned a passage back to the Islands, and I don’t know what talents would be the most helpful to others here on the Big Island, but I am here to serve the community in any way I can. Aloha! Chris
