Ever wondered what it feels like to live off-grid? To grow and eat organic food? To be wifi free? The Crossing Land is an environment education centre and sustainable site for families, groups, couples, or individuals to holiday and connect in. We have river access , permaculture gardens, solar power, rainwater tanks, chickens, sheep, composting toilets, wood stove, outdoor campfire, cosy private bedrooms and train carriage bunk rooms for the more adventurous. Participation on site encouraged.

The space
The entire site is available for booking in this listing. We can accommodate up to 33 people if the double beds are used by couples/two people and all bunks are occupied. However with Covid-19 we are currently limited to 16 under the 4 square metre rule. For group bookings we prefer families, or education groups with an accompanying teacher or responsible elder.

Airbnb only has a maximum of 16 on their forms. The booking fee you see online is for up to 16 people. When the Covid-19 rules are not in effect we have an additional charge of $45/person per night for every person beyond 16. Just reach out to us with a message as you book to tell us the total adults and children in your booking. Airbnb have advised paying the additional person fees through the resolution centre . Once we accept your booking offer for up to 16 we will reach out to to you through the centre with a request for the additional guest charges.

As you are booking the entire site, you will not share the site with other guests outside of your group. We do have a Camp Host on-site in a separate house who is available to orientate you, and check-in daily if you need any further assistance.

Guest access
Hi from the Crossing family,

it's so great you found our unique site on Airbnb. We are looking forward to hosting you at our Permaculture Camp on the edge of farmland, river and forest! Our sustainable site is off-grid, low-impact, solar-powered with dry composting toilets, and no wifi. Please make sure this style of accommodation will complement your holiday!

Guests are able to access a common kitchen, Community Hall lounge area, and male and female bathrooms, each with two showers. There are 6 composting toilets outside of the accommodation. Four are within 15m of the sleeping area.

If you are not familiar with dry composting toilets it is important to understand that a cup of sawdust must be added each time they are used and the lid must be left down afterwards by each member of your group to ensure they work correctly.

The Crossing feels like a remote place however we are only 15 minutes drive to Bermagui and surrounding beaches with half of the drive being on an unsealed dirt road.

Chelsea and Josh, your Camp Hosts at The Crossing live and work on site. They are available to guests for assistance and may pass by the common areas during your stay to do maintenance tasks, work in the garden, or just to check-in and see if you need anything. They are available to answer any questions and will orientate you on arrival.

Your Airbnb host, Dean, lives about half a kilometre from the camp with his wife Annette. Dean and Annette founded this Environment Education Camp almost 25 years ago and donated the Land to the Environmental Trust. Along their journey they have had thousands of young people contribute to the design. They are happy to share their knowledge of sustainable design and the region with you at a mutually convenient time during your stay.

We do not book multiple groups at the same time. If you see a reference to shared spaces that is to let you know that the community hall and it's commercial kitchen is for members of your group to share.

Guests are are encouraged to spend time in our permaculture gardens and native bush surrounds. The Crossing is a registered conservation area and sits next to the Bermagui Rive, which is tidal with many different fish and sea creatures.

We have an abundance of native wildlife from kangaroos and wallabies to migratory birds, glider possums and even goannas on the warmer days.

Our Camp Hosts implement the Airbnb enhanced cleaning protocols to make your stay at The Crossing Covid-safe.

Please be aware that guests cannot be accepted to The Crossing from a Covid-19 hotspot, and anyone experiencing flue-like symptoms prior to arrival must self-isolate home.

Please confirm with us that all members of your group are not in a current hotspot and do not have Covid 19 symptoms so that we can accept your booking.

Cheers Dean

Other things to note
We aren't connected to wifi, but a few areas of our site pick up Telstra reception. We are keen to welcome people who can feel at home here while also caring for our low impact systems, such as being conscious of power and water usage and using natural and chemical free products. As a nature conservation site, and a small farm we are pet free to protect the animals here including our native wildlife with many threatened and endangered species.

I am an outdoor educator and permaculture designer. Over the last 25 years I've hosted journeys and experiences that help people, especially young people, to live more sustainably. My wife and I co-founded The Crossing Land Environment Education Centre in 1998 and it is fantastic to now have families stay here as Airbnb guests to experience sustainable living.
