The space
Small but stylishly functional, it’s Tassie shack meets boutique hotel.

The bath in front of the fireplace is the highlight.

The kitchen has everything you need to cook a gorgeous meal, with a custom-designed bar table to dine at & enjoy a wine or two.

The record player & sound bar have bluetooth for your devices & there is a cool selection of vinyl.

There is a stylish seperate bathroom with a walk-in shower, a toilet, a washer & a dryer. Sukin products are provided & a hairdryer.

The cabin is set right on the main road of the tiny town of Waratah, with a waterfall across the road. You’ll get some cars passing in the day, but it’s very quiet at night.

There is no WIFI, but lots of books & movies. And a day bed & desk if you’re feeling inspired by the view of misty Happy Valley.

Inspired by MONA - it’s a mix of old & new. It’s for travellers who want a comfortable experience while still connecting with nature.

It’s designed to slow you down, so you can relax & enjoy your break.

We’re interested in sustainability, the environment & health. Everything in the cabin is low tox.

We supply good quality coffee, lots of tea & basic pantry needs. As well as, firewood, kindling & firestarters.

Inside we’ve commissioned art from local artists & wood work from local carvers.

“Joe’s Bookie Shed” is definitely not for everyone - it’s quirky & not perfect, but soulful & sweet.

It’s an intimate space. Not suitable for kids, pets, people 70+ or anyone with mobility issues.

Designed for the young & the young at heart who want to decompress & be in nature, but still want all the feels of a boutique hotel in a country shack vibe.

Guest access
It’s all yours to enjoy!

Other things to note
We absolutely adore Waratah but you come here to get away from it all - so you’ll need to bring all your favourite food and drinks.

Especially during times of travel restrictions - opening times may vary.

We recommend The Waratah Roadhouse (the petrol station) which has basic food supplies, it’s run by the friendly, hard-working Wendy & Sheb - it’s open 7 days...they do great comfort food.

We also love The MUSHroom Cafe run by the lovely Cobi & Greg. It’s a cute cosy cafe open Wed-Sun - 10am-3pm. They always have their fire on and sell some interesting local crafts.

Please understand you’re in a very remote part of the world so prepare accordingly - embrace it as part of the adventure.

There is a big Woolworths in Burnie with a bottle shop across the road. There are some great delis & foodstores in Wivenhoe just before Burnie, we love Delish in Wivenhoe. There’s Young’s fruit & veges in Somerset which is worth the detour. If you’re coming up the other way from Hobart via Strahan the IGA in Strahan is great. Our favourite place to shop is the Hill Street Grocer in Devonport or Hobart.

We’re in a wild remote area, please ensure you have the right travel insurance we cannot give refunds because of the weather. From time to time we can experience black outs, wild weather, wildlife, dust & SNOW!

You’re in the Bush, so everything that comes with that beauty & wildness is here. From wallabies, Tassie devils, echidnas, wombats & platypuses to rare birds.

But hey isn’t that why you’re coming to stay?

Location

Waratah, Tasmania, Australia

Waratah is in the Tarkine & an easy 45 mins from Cradle Mountain, making it perfect for day trips. Waratah is slow, small & mystical.

“The Tarkine is the largest remaining tract of unprotected wild & scenic country in Tasmania,” says Bob Brown.

Waratah is an ex-mining town in the Bush, there are remnants of that time.

We have a great selection of books on the area in the cabin. There are all sorts of tales about how the Tasmanian tiger still lives in these parts...along with the history of the town having the richest tin mine in the world. It was the first town in Australia to have electric street lights.

There are platypuses in the lake & gigantic lobsters which date back to prehistoric times. At night if you sit outside the cabin quietly you’ll see wallabies, pademelons, quolls, possums and Tasmanian devils come up from the gully where the waterfall is.

During the day you’ll see beautiful birds, including the rare pink breasted robin, the wedge tail eagle & the swift parrot.

You’re in the bush so there are bugs & flies - bring your favourite insect repellent.

The Tarkine is rich in Aboriginal heritage from over 60,000 years and the flora dates back 100 million years. The rainforests, plants & animals that live here are ancient from the Tassie devils & spotted quolls, to the incredible birds.

It’s a very high vibration place.
There is a stillness here that you can’t find in many other places, because so few people have been here.

You’ll notice the air is incredibly pure, the cleanest in the world.
Our rainwater tank is pure & delicious. It’s a special, albeit slightly kooky town. The perfect place for stressed-out city folk to decompress.

As soon as we arrive back here we feel different, it’s how we should always feel.

By the way the neighbours are far away so feel free to blast your tunes, there’s a record player & with Bluetooth speakers most smart phones connect to. The cabin is set right on the street but it’s still very quiet especially at night.
