The Beet Retreat is a very special experience, unique to the Yarra Valley.
An in-house B&B with all the warmth and welcome you would hope for, tempered with the privacy you need.

Cuddles with the friendly resident animals or wildlife watch from the balcony or comfort of your bed after a day exploring the wineries or trails.

A beautiful breakfast is included in the room rate and vibrant, home-cooked plant based dinners are also available by prior arrangement.

The space

A spacious, light filled contemporary home in the beautiful Yarra Valley.

My home has a wonderful ambience, is very comfortable and relaxing for all who come to stay.
The birdsong, kangaroos and morning sun will bring a smile to your face after a long and peaceful nights sleep.

The double sized room with its sweeping views across the valley, has its own private entry, sitting area with comfy couches, large screen TV/DVD player, many cd's and books and also a beautiful private deck and upstairs bathroom for your own use.
It also features a queen size bed with quality pillow top mattress, ceiling fans and reverse-cycle/split system AC.

This room is a favourite for many solo women also who come to stay as a retreat as it is large, quiet, restful.
Cool in summer and cosy in winter....the safe space we all crave to escape to from time to time!

Smiths Gully is a delightful alcove well off the main road yet central to many scenic drives and the local Community Market is held on Saturdays and you can enjoy many wonderful stalls and be entertained by the colourful parade of people watching for hours.

Just 15 mins from Yarra Glen with its many wineries, boutique breweries and restaurants and 20 from Kinglake where the mountain magic will envelop you at any time of the year.

Local organic pizza place "Boy named Sue" is a great place to drop in to and enjoy a funky laid back atmosphere and great coffee and locally sourced food.

The St Andrews pub has live music and rustic ambience on weekends too. A well known and long respected venue for Blues musicians in particular.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast the walks, running and mountain bike trails are fantastic here.

There are horses and three cats on the property.

The house is not suitable for those with mobility issues and I apologise in advance.

I also apologise that infants and children are generally not catered for here for safety reasons as there are animals, wildlife, high balconies, stairs etc and it is generally marketing to a tranquil retreat for adults only.

There is a facility for a third person in this room on an air mattress at an extra $30 per night. *conditions apply

As mentioned previously, while you certainly don't need to be vegan or even vegetarian, I am an Ethical Vegan (animals are friends) and I would ask that you respect that for the duration of your stay by not bringing any animal produce like dairy, eggs, fish or meats or anything containing those things here and consider that before making your booking.

Consider it a challenge, a health weekend or a perfect introduction to a more conscious way of consuming and living :)

I am also delighted to create beautiful dishes for you by prior arrangement, at a very reasonable price and also, for those wishing to learn more about plant-based nutrition or broaden their current repertoire of such dishes, I offer fun and informal cooking classes. A great way to learn is to DO! :-)

The Beet Retreat is really something quiet unique in the B&B landscape and I'm proud of that.

I hope you too will embrace what I strive to offer guests here, whether it's just a chance for guests to unwind and eat healthy food or something more profound...
The choice is entirely yours.
Animal Rights and Plant Based foods are my passion and I will happily share and answer questions if you are curious to know more but aside from my request for guests not to bring animal derived foods non-vegan here, my focus is on making everyone happy and relaxed! 3

Guest access

You are welcome to wander the 20 acres but remain outside of the paddocks that have horses in them unless I am with you. You can share the spacious lounge and main deck while respecting the privacy of the guests in that end of the house.
The use of the kitchen is NOT available but I will personally provide exceptional quality meals at a reasonable cost.

Interaction with guests

I LOVE being social with my guests, mainly at meal time, if that's why they come, and many do...
But it is dependent on my other commitments and your wishes/requirements.
You may choose to be as private or social as you feel at the time :-)

Other things to note

Please note this a vegan B&B and ensure that no consumable animal produce is brought into the property.

This property is on tank water which is perfectly safe to drink ( I love it) but bring bottled if you'd prefer not.
WI-FI Available!

Telstra works outside but Optus works better all over the area.

NOTE: During the declared extreme fire danger period especially during January/February either party may cancel the booking at short notice (under 24 hours) LESS both parties admin fees from Air BnB.
I will return your booking fee via private transfer within 7 days as Air BnB doesn't cater for such events to my knowledge.
For me its just a safety issue and the right thing to do.

PLEASE NOTE: This cancellation/refund policy will apply ONLY to a declared Total Fire Ban day.

I have an accredited WildFire Safety Bunker for 6 people installed for use in emergencies. I expect I'll never have to use it but it is here now for yours and my peace of mind.

Jan is a very accommodating host. We tried vegan food during our stay with her (which she made herself!) and it was actually very nice and doable (from someone who loves meat!). I felt great after that light yet sumptuous meal. Jan's place is very cosy and unique. It was beautiful and is made for those who are looking to relax. Really quiet and peaceful. The house pets are also very friendly... we miss them all! :) Would have loved to stay longer but we had to get going and start our journey to Sydney.

I stayed 2 weeks at the Beet Retreat and relished every minute of wallowing in Jan’s company; an amazing combination of niceness, eloquence, fluid-thinking and laugh-out-loud funniness. The retreat is a perfectly relaxing environment socially and physically. I’m glad I visited before Jan becomes a household name. The breakfast smoothies are like liquid cheesecake, and the other meals are also delicious. The grass in front of the house is soft and prickle-free enabling barefoot frolicking even for the normally shod. Co-host Mac is overwhelmingly charming.

If you are looking to get away from it all in a relaxing location and experience some of the wildlife the Australian country side has to offer plus the benefit of an excellent host then go no further! Jan was out when we arrived at Beet Retreat however she had provided accurate intructions of how we could access the house and our self contained room which was at one end of Jan's house. We had our own kitchen facilities and bathroom with large shower and bath, all very comfortable, modern, well presented and in excellent order. From our deck we had a fantastic view over the valley and fields, there were kangaroos grazing in the paddock out front and flocks of cockatoos in the nearby trees. Jan produced a very healthy breakfast, which set us up for the day ahead. Smiths Gully is located close to a number of wineries, and attractive towns and the countryside of the Yarra Valley, (nearby St Andrews has a great market on Saturday). You can get to this hidden gem in less than an hours drive from Melbourne!

I love my beautiful property and am delighted to share it with you!

After a 33 year professional career, I took off backpacking around the world, in 2013 exploring off the track places and trail running in many incredible locations. I had an epiphany and came home and started running the BnB...then morphed into a REAL B&B! The Beet Retreat! Its such fun!

I stayed in a number of Air BnB homes as I travelled and absolutely loved it! I think my home and property has so much to offer for locals and international travellers alike.

I love the road less travelled. I embrace fresh air, wild places and open spaces, mountains and sea... down to earth and passionate people who care deeply about our world and all in it.

I am an adventurist at heart and my favourite sports are trail running (just started ultra running) and Adventure racing with all its related activities. Strength training, Yoga and Pilates are also on my "menu". :-)

I love to get outside and be active but I also love stimulating conversations about things that matter.
I prefer the quiet life most the time and read and potter about the farm here if not training, racing or doing volunteer work for animal rights groups.

I love music and reading and creating incredible plant based don't have to be vegan to enjoy them. HONEST :-)

Thank you for considering my home as your escape. Speak soon
