Joglo Gumuk is a traditional Javanese house, situated around 8 km South of Yogyakarta, surrounded by beautiful farmlands of rice fields and vegetables. Enjoy the atmosphere of a historical house in the mid of rice fields and tropical vegetation.

The space
We take the safety of our guests and staff during the Pandemic very serious. This is why we kindly ask guests to make an Antigen Test before they are checking into our place to provide a safe environment for guest and staff.

Our housekeeper will be wearing a mask and we will follow the guidelines regarding the hygienic protocol. Please get in touch with us, if you have any questions.

THE HOUSE
The spacious house has an open kitchen, dining and living area, as well as a separated kitchen storage. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, oven, stove and kitchen utensils. Our staff will directly prepare there your breakfast in the mornings.

There is one bedroom with a comfortable bed (160 x 200 cm) as well as a spacious bamboo sofa bed in the open living area (140 x 200 cm).

Our open-air bathroom is set in a small tropical garden with hot shower and a sunken bath. We provide eco friendly, home-produced natural soaps and oils for shower and baths.

FOOD SERVICE
We offer breakfast, prepared by our staff. We also arrange delivery of traditional food from the village for lunch and dinner.

For breakfast, we offer meals based on local products. You can choose among bread and eggs, rice porridge with spicy tempeh sauce, rice porridge with banana or Nasi Goreng (fried rice). Every breakfast is served with tea or coffee (with coffee from our own coffee roastery) and a selection of tropical fruits.

THE HOUSE
Rumah Gladak - this is how the house is historically named - has originally been used to store and dry rice grains. We placed this sweet little house in a nice spot of our land with a vast view over the rice fields.

Rumah Gladak is a small simply furnished space with a bamboo bed of 140 x 200 cm perfect for one person or two people. Adjuncted to the house is a spacious open- air bathroom integrated in a small tropical garden. We provide eco-friendly, home-made natural soaps.

A few steps away from Rumah Gladak is a kitchen for your private use only, equipped with a small fridge, basic kitchen tools, coffee, tea and a small dining area surrounded by the garden.

FOOD SERVICE
We offer breakfast, prepared by our staff. We also arrange delivery of traditional food from the village and close-by restaurants for lunch and dinner.

For breakfast, we focus on local products. You can choose between: bread and eggs , rice porridge with spicy tempeh sauce, Rice flour porridge with banana or Nasi Goreng (fried rice). Every breakfast is served with tea or coffee (coffee will be from our own coffee roastery) and a selection of tropical fruits.

MASSAGE
We arrange massage for guests by massage therapists from the village. On request, our staff is making an apointment for a massage. During the pandemic, massage is still possible. We work with a company, which follows the COVID protocol tightly and is testing their staff regularly.

YOGA
We offer private Yoga classes in our newly built Yoga Studio, situation on our land. During pandemic, Yoga class is possible. The Yoga teacher will take care of keeping distance and classes take place on open space.

LAUNDRY
There is a laundry service based on your needs.

Guest access
On the land is also a garden studio for Meditation, Yoga and small Workshops. It is equipped with Yoga mats and some sitting bags to relax.

We arrange private classes for Yoga with a Yoga teacher coming to our place. (Price 250.000 rp for 90 minutes). Please let us know in advance if you want to get a private Yoga class.

We also arrange a Workshop in Jamu making (Javanese Herbal Drinks) to take place at the garden studio. Length is around 2 hours (Price 250.000 rp). During pandemic, Jamu workshop is possible to book.

If you want to dig more into the Javanese crafts, we can arrange as well a Workshop in Wayang Kulit Figures (Shadow Puppets) from a master in our village and Batik Workshop in the beautiful Village Giriloyo. Currently during the pandemic, the Workshops in Wayang Kulit are not available, since they would take place indoors.

Other things to note
In the process of building the house, our visions was to find a balance between privacy and connectedness to our surroundings.

We decided to keep the living area open without walls towards the garden and rice fields. The big trees, aligned along the house, offer a nice protection from wind and direct views into the house, while you can still witness the activities of the farmers around you.

Next to the house is another, small guesthouse (Rumah Gladak), which we offer for rent as well. It can be also rented together with Joglo Gumuk, if you want to come with a group or a bigger family.

We also share the land with the father of the landowner, who is living at the back part of the land and is guarding our houses by day and night.

INTERNET
We have wireless Internet. Suitable for people who need to work while they stay in our place.

CATS
We have currently one cat to control mice and snakes not entering the living area. If you are a cat lover, you will be happy because they love to be close to anyone who comes. If you do have a cat allergy or just dont like cats around you, our house might not be the right place for you.

COPING WITH TROPICAL NATURE
The picture might make this already clear, but we want to make sure before you book: we are in the middle of tropical nature. So it means if you come, you should be not too scared of nature and its creatures. Please reflect on this by yourself before you book.

KIDS
We do not promote our place as especially kid friendly as it might not be safe for children with the ponds on our land. Though, we used to have families, who really enjoyed staying in our place and families are welcome when they feel the place fits for them.

SWIMMING POOL AND RESTAURANTS
Besides traditional Warungs in the village, there are some restaurants in the area, walkable or by bike or motorbike. There is a swimming pool at a nearby hotel, possible to use for outside guests (around 10 minutes walk).

HANDICRAFTS IN NEARBY VILLAGES
Our area is known for its handicrafts. Our village is the center for Wayang Kulit figures (shadow puppets from leather). There is also the center of ceramic in Kasongan, a village for wood painting. We designed a map to give orientation of the surrounding villages and can give you advise on this.

For further travel tips, we drafted a small booklet for trips in the area.

We are offering this house for rent during times, in which we don't live there by ourselves as we divide our time between Berlin, Jakarta and Yogyakarta. This means, we will not be present during your stay.

But there will be a friend of us on check in, who speaks fluent English and who you can contact anytime if you have questions.
