House rules

Self contained, quiet accommodation. Little Rock is a sheep farm, 3 km from Merredin, 260 km from Perth, 5-10 minutes from highway and train station. The Lodge has one queen-size bed and one single bed, in separate rooms. Folding single bed on request. DVD, undercover parking, complementary overnight charging for an electric vehicle, BBQ, fire pit (subject to fire restrictions). Dog OK . Yard for 1-2 horses.

The space
A rural setting minutes from a country town which has all usual services, including a large supermarket open 7 days. One spacious self contained unit with a double and a single bed. There will be no other guests on the farm. A high masonry wall separates the owner's house from the Lodge. A great area for walking, cycling or horse riding. (BYO bicycle or horse!).

Guest access
All the facilities of the Lodge. Wander anywhere around the 33 ha farm or beyond on quiet roads and tracks. Leave gates as you find them. There are no live electric fences. The sheep are not pets but reasonably quiet.

Other things to note
I am the only person living at Little Rock. I might not always be present when you arrive or depart but will let you know if that will be the case and I will be contactable by mobile phone.
Expect summer to be hot and dry, sometimes with nuisance flies and occasionally mosquitoes at night . The mainly native garden is designed to survive the wheatbelt climate, requiring little or no watering. There are no lawns. Winters are cool to cold with occasional mild frosts. Definitely no snow! For winter use there is a fire-pit for guest use in front of the Lodge.

Location

Merredin, Western Australia, Australia

Little Rock is a quiet, attractive small sheep farm on the edge of, but out of sight of Merredin which has approximately 3,000 residents. Merredin is a safe, friendly town with excellent sporting facilities, including a large, modern Recreation Centre, plus a gymnasium, tennis, golf, swimming pool and lawn bowls. As well, there is a library, Community Resource Centre, Central Wheatbelt Visitor Centre, two museums and the Cummins Theatre - an outstanding historic theatre, which frequently presents a variety of live shows, including performances by the Merredin Repertory Club. There are plenty of takeaway venues and good places to dine. Merredin is a good central location from which to explore the surrounding small towns, large granite rocks and diverse beautiful bushland of the eastern wheatbelt and goldfields. Merredin is approximately midway between Kalgoorlie and Perth, and travelling time to or from either is 3-4 hours by car or train.

Born and educated in Victoria, I worked as a veterinarian in Tasmania and Western Australia, but am now retired (December 2017). In retirement, as well as operating The Lodge, I care for my sheep, sing in a local choral group and I am a member of the local Men's Shed, the Wildflower Society and the Historical Society (Railway Museum). In October 2017 I was elected as a Merredin Shire Councillor. Well travelled, with a particular interest in China. I mostly travel independently, enjoy public transport, especially trains, and prefer interesting medium-low cost accommodation where I do not feel anonymous. Interested in sustainable farming (have a flock of Dorper sheep), walking, cycling, energy efficient housing, landscape design that's appropriate for its environment (no lawns here!). I am the proud owner of an electric car (Kona). Read a variety of books (Book Club member), but for myself I choose garden and house design, action thrillers, murder, science fiction, books on China. As a host I enjoy conversation and hearing from other people about their origins, travels and future plans. Depending when you visit you may not see much of me but I will let you know in advance if I am unable to be present when you arrive. The Butler motto is As I find it. This fits my usual outlook.

During your stay
Only as much as guests wish. I enjoy conversation but only if that is your wish. It's possible you might not meet me at all, but usually I will meet guests on arrival and perhaps on departure.
