The space

Three bedroom, one bath, sleeps six-eight

This beautiful country home is located just steps away from a sandy beach in a quiet cove, perfect for young children, for swimming in warm weather, and for beach combing year round. Grassy fields surround the house, which has views of the ocean on two sides. Downstairs, there is a spacious and bright living/dining area with a fully equipped kitchen, wood stove, green house, and spectacular views of the ocean and meadows. Upstairs, there are three main bedrooms, two with double beds and one with single beds. On the third floor is another bedroom with a double bed. The first floor also features a large recreation room, perfect for children to play in, and the original workshop of Swans Island Blankets, a cottage industry founded by the owners of the house. All bedrooms offer views of the ocean. 25 acres of meadow, woods, a small pond, and pink granite shorefront invite leisurely afternoon strolls.

The house is fully insulated and will make a comfortable cool-weather retreat as well.

A small grocery store is just a ten-minute’s walk away. Free wireless service is available at the town office, just fifteen-minute’s away by foot, or five minutes by car. The Island’s much loved Fine Sand Beach is a short distance away.

The island features sandy beaches, coves with smooth stones, spectacular hikes, fishing, and swimming in a local fresh water quarry. During summer months the town offers frequent “Town Breakfasts,” concerts, and other community events.

Another lovely house shares the property. Perfect to rent separately or jointly for larger groups: Peaceful Shoreline Cottage

Other things to note

Please print and read the house manual below. The general store on island is pretty well stocked but small and pricey with limited hours. You can buy lobster and usually selfish as well at the wharf but that is about it. It is a dry island so there is no alcohol for sale anywhere. We generally stop at the Hannafords in Ellsworth then perhaps also at the gourmet Sawyers market in Southwest Harbor on MDI. There is alcohol in Hannafords and wine at Sawyers. So leave plenty of time for this. There is debate about how early you should arrive to get in line for the ferry. 1 hour? 20 min? If you arrive too late, you may not be able to take your car on. Some prefer to pay a little extra and call ahead for a reservation. This is a good idea if you are shooting for the last boat. It is soo nice up there, have a wonderful time!

We spent a week in this beautiful, comfortable, well-appointed house on an incredibly peaceful island. A haven for those who like solitude and nature, not for those looking for lots of shopping and restaurants. Be prepared to bring in all your food and beverages–the island is dry and the grocery store is basic. You can get the most amazing lobster and clams fresh on the island. The Fine Sand Beach became one of my favorite beaches I've ever been to, and is truly unique for Maine. Can't recommend highly enough!

So first things first - you aren't going to Swans Island for a jam-packed, Hamptons-style consumerist're looking for a quiet stay to soak in the Maine coast and all of the local characters. That being said, the farmhouse is a wonderful place. Plenty of room to cook, read, play games, and relax. Close to a stone beach, a bit further walk to a sand one. Centrally-located on the islands and very close to the TIMS (The Island Market and Supplies) and a short drive to the library for evening activities and the occasional internet fix (leave the internet on the mainland...learn to be human again.) We were a bit surprised that local islanders don't lock doors - once you meet them, you will understand why - they're all one big family looking out for each other. Overall, a great place to detox from modern society and the internet...bring patience, walking shoes, bug spray, and a good hat! A few things to make your trip a bit easier: - Print out directions to the will lose internet coverage on the south side of Mt Desert Island and will not have it on Swans Island. The crutch of (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps will be removed (and you will like it!) - If you like to dry your hair, bring a hair dryer as one is not provided. - Stock up on groceries on the mainland. While there is a very interesting grocery on the island, it can be a little expensive. Also, alcohol sales are not allowed on the island so BYOB. - Plan ahead on ferries and time your schedule. You can get reservations, but be flexible and plan on devoting an appropriate amount of time there, especially if you're traveling in from Portland or Boston.

We had a lovely lovely time in Swan's Island. The house is equipped simply but all the necessities are covered. In any way we really enjoyed the beautiful beaches and the outdoors so very much. I would definitely visit again.

very nice house, with lots of room for lots of people to sleep. The common area is a little small for a large group, but there is a big backyard, and the beach is a short walk away. there is also a beautiful sandy beach about a mile away, and so many fun things to do on this island. it is for people who aren't looking for shopping. its for walking, reading, napping, painting and thinking. its great!

The house was a good fit for two families- we really enjoyed Swans island. It's a fairly rustic spot- not for those looking for tons of amenities or extras.

My siblings and I have been going to Swans Island since the early 1970s when our parents first started going there for summers. Our parents, John and Carolyn Grace, bought and refurbished the Shore House in the early 80s, and founded a cottage industry on the property in the mid-90s making handwoven wool blankets (Swans Island Blankets, now run out of Northport ME). Through the mid 2000s, they lived on the island year-round and ran the business from the Meadow House. We all continue to love and cherish the two houses and its surrounding fields and woods, as well as the island community, its rugged coastline, granite ledges, blackberries, and spruce forests.
