I have a home which I have decorated for a wedding venue.....by sheer chance. And I would like you to share it with me.
And if you don't have a wedding, but would like spend some time away from home, come and enjoy the peace and quiet here.

The space
Have you ever planned a wedding? I have, for Jane, my BFF. Jane’s daughter wanted to observe all the customs of a traditional Chinese wedding. And why not? Jane and husband Dick were over the moon because modern young ladies these days have flighty dreams of destination weddings at some far-off island in the middle of no-where, leaving the parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles at a loss; go or no go? And also the jeemooi who wanted to spend some time alone with the bride before she became a guy’s wife? My dear BFF felt so blessed that her daughter had her feet well on the ground, so all the celebrations would happen here, right here, on home ground then. Decided.

So we started looking. We had to, because Jane lived in a fancy condo which was a tad small to accommodate all that we had in mind to do. Hotels would have been good but the price was forbidding. We checked with restaurants. They could offer us fancy 9-course banquets and no more. I nearly gave up and was about to divert my BFF’s attention to a brochure about Bora Bora that I spotted at the wedding photographer’s magazine basket, when I suddenly had an idea! Why not use my house which I only occasionally used for family and guests? It’s got 5 big bedrooms, a large lounge and dining area, 2 kitchens and a patio and garden….all that we needed to hold all the ceremonies we wanted.

Jane and I went into a frenzy. We scrubbed and we cleaned and we decked up my house. The rest I will tell you in pictures I have posted here.

Everything turned out like a dream. The night before the big day Jane’s entire family arrived from Miri. Eight jeemooi had already checked in, girl-guides style, and having girl’s fun with the bride. Mixed feelings I could clearly see. Happiness for the bride, and sadness that she would now have to share time with someone else in her new life. Aiyah, aunties like us look on and look back at our own lives and can just laugh out loud. LOL yah ? At the appointed hour Jane and Dick conducted the seong-tow for their daughter, amidst prayers to the heavenly father to bless their daughter with a marriage as good as theirs, with a husband as good as Dick and with a mother-in-law twice as good as Jane. So hilarious. Actually it went like : First stroke of the comb…their marriage would last till the end of time
Second stroke…..they would both age together till their hair turned silver
Third stroke ……may they be blessed with a big brood of children and grandchildren.

The 8 jeemoois had lots of stories to regale everyone with. Dick’s brothers were tickled pink when those sweet-lipped lasses dragged them up for a little jiggle of a dance. Jane’s sisters glowed when they were told they could pass off as bridesmaids too. Gullible yah? Aunties.....

And Jane’s grand-old aunt , tired from the flight, slept through all the fun and merriment in her own quiet room, to rejuvenate herself for the big day coming up.

Knock knock. Who’s there ? Supper delivery. Not Domino’s nor Mackers, but authentic auspicious Hakka home-cooked delights from the neighbourhood caterer. You see, I have a list of regular caterers who run restaurants nearby and I call upon them for suppers and whatever meals I need. So pampered. So everybody had a great day and went to bed bellyful. Me too.

Cock-a-doodle-doo…..the big day arrived with a sun which promised a future as bright. Jeemoois hurried to pretty-up. The make-up artist/hair stylist arrived in her Cayenne. Wow! The work on Jane’s daughter began at 9. By 10 she was already an apparition. Dick could not hold back his tears, and I had to pinch him hard on his love-handle to stop him from messing up his daughter’s done face. Dick has yet to forgive me for the blue-black he got.

Knock knock again. Hakka noodles, yongtaufu, paper-wrapped chicken, and an assortment of colorful steamed cakes arrived in trays. That was for feeding the groom and groomsmen when they came to claim the bride.

And came they did. 12 groomsmen whom the groom grew up with, called his hengtai …and a big fat roast-pig with crackling skin and a wide wide grin. There was a whole lot of pranks played on these brave young men, all in good jest. The entourage was 12-car strong and thank goodness for ample verge-space in front of my house, nobody was flustered about parking. The wedding photographer had a field day, spoilt for choice of backdrops in my house. Jane and I had actually done a great job. When time came for the bride to be taken away by her groom, the jeemooi prepared tea for the bride to serve to her parents before she relinquished her maiden family name. Lots of tears and laughter. Lots of gold ornaments for the bride’s trousseau and lots of angpows for all the jeemoois , the groom and his hengtai. Happy happy all round, it was when everyone partook of the yummy brunch. And I ate too much jah-yook.

At noon sharp Dick reluctantly ushered her daughter out of the house, red umbrella held high to shade her from all things inauspicious. Jane was in tow to whisper words of love to her daughter. When the bridal car door closed on the new couple, I could see that there was not a dry eye waving them off. I too felt a tinge of sadness, exactly why, I could not tell. Maybe it was because I had the nasty job of having to chop off the head and the tail of that poor pig, as it was the custom to return them to the groom’s family for their good luck. And the jeemoois were piled into the hengtais cars and off they went to escort the bride.
Jane and I and everyone else flopped back into the house for a much needed rest. The new couple was expected back in a couple of hours after they had served tea to the new in-laws whose residence was not too far away. And return they did, late afternoon. The bridal chamber came in most useful for the bride and groom to take a rest before the banquet later in the evening. The jeemooi’s looked a bit wilted, but it did not take long for them to spruce up, and they bounced back as fresh as daisies again very quickly, in new satin gowns of pink and peach and purple. The wonder of youth!

Well, Jane and I heaved a sigh of relief. All had gone as we had planned. My house had served its purpose and it did not cost Dick an arm and a leg. Were we to remove all the plum blossoms, the lanterns and the fu-lu-shou figurines? Were we to take down the shou-ko over the entrance door. Were we to box away the lovely tea-set and red umbrella? This time it was Jane who came up with a bright spark. Why not we offer my house as a venue for brides who don’t have such facilities at home or even to grooms to hold their bucks’ night. Everything was already there. I agreed wholeheartedly.
