Wake up to breakfast and coffee

Included essentials make mornings extra easy.
The sweetest house that was once a fruit shop, in a delightful old goldfields town. Completely rebuilt and restored, Shopkeeper's is now a world of things beautiful, handmade and preloved. It's a place with a story to tell, a vintage-lover’s dream. With lots to check out, and lush beds, it’s the place to escape the everyday.

For romantic hearts and creative souls.

The space
The perfect house for those who love things pre-loved and bespoke, with a quality sound system (including a turntable + vinyl), a definite vintage vibe and a focus on the locally-made. Most things have had a previous life, because they have the most character, and because we prefer to reuse and recycle. It’s a space of the reclaimed and salvaged, texture with a dash of antique interest, velvet and good art. Bedouin Societe French linen bedding completes the picture.

Super-cosy in winter with both a wood fire and gas heater; and the split-system keeps things cool in summer.

A large garden with the biggest shady tree for lazing on the lawn in summer.

It’s the perfect space for 2 people and cosy for 4.

Lots of games and puzzles, and walking and cycling trails just around the corner.

Guest access
The Shopkeeper's House is entirely yours for the duration of your stay.

Over the hotter months someone will visit to water the garden, and if the lawn is to be mown during your stay we will let you know.

Other things to note
2 night minimum stay except long weekends and festival weekends (Easter and Cup weekend/folk festival - 4 night min) and the Christmas/New Year period (4 night min).

We provide a ‘starter’ hamper of fresh milled pancake mix from Goodness Flour, (and the things necessary to make them up), with a selection of Natasha Morgan’s seasonal syrups. Fresh locally-roasted coffee, a selection of teas, and your milk preference complete the picture.

We are happy to accommodate furry friends but require a prior conversation to make sure your stay is a happy one. Please ensure that you add your pet to your booking, and note that a surcharge of $50 applies for stays with a pet.

Contact us for ways we can make your special occasion perfect (Shopkeeper's has been the setting for 4 proposals at last count, which delights us more than you could know!). Always make sure to let us know in advance, no matter what the occasion!

Please, no parties or events without prior and explicit approval. Any items removed from Shopkeeper's will be charged at replacement + 10% (excludes consumables of course!)

Neighbourhood highlights

Walk out your door and turn right, and 5mins later you’ll be ordering your coffee in the heart of the lovely little heritage town of Maldon (Le Sel does a great almond croissant, but you have to be early!).

Turn left, and in that time you’ll be on a track wandering through bush. There are loads of walking and cycling trails to suit all capabilities, including the Maldon-Castlemaine trail that joins up with the Goldfields Track. We’re also happy to arrange bike hire for you. Spring with its wildflowers and orchids is always a delight, and you’ll often spot kangaroos and wallabies around at dawn and dusk, as well as an occasional echidna and lots of birds.

Maldon itself is a unique goldfields town, with interesting architecture, fascinating stories, and a great museum if history is your thing. We have some lovely shops in town, with things you won’t find most places (Enfilade Plus is a favourite, especially if you love the bedlinen!)

Shopkeeper’s is right by the station, but don’t let that scare you - it’s a tourist steam train, that's back to running on Sundays atm, and provides the best steam train sounds as a backdrop. If you’d like to take a trip, ask us for details. We can even arrange your tickets for you.

We have lots of suggestions if you're interested in touring around the region - there are quite a few good vintage shops in town and loads further afield, along with some great wineries and cideries. And Experience Maldon provides a new range of workshops to suit a range of interests

There’s a small supermarket in town along with a butcher’s, pharmacy and service station (regular business hours only - the supermarket opens till 6.30pm most seasons). Otherwise, Castlemaine has a large supermarket, a few servos, and every other food, wine and general service you might need.

My work: University tutor/lecturer/student
I'm a landscape architect and academic, and I think I'm doing a phd but sometimes I'm not sure about that. I like food, and travel, and cats, and music and my husband Jeff. And other things too, but this isn't a dating site after all. And I really like getting to know other people's towns as well as just hanging out and walking them.
