Beautiful area

Guests love this home’s scenic location.
Otways Loft is a whimsical marvel of imagination and craftsmanship — a treehouse-like retreat unlike anywhere else. Three storeys of hand-crafted timber, salvaged vintage train carriage parts, and unique architectural details make every corner a delight to discover.

The space
Hand-built by timber designer Michael Patterson, every joint, panel and detail was carefully crafted by hand. Salvaged church flooring, locally felled mountain ash, and sliding train carriage doors welcome morning light and reveal new details with every visit.

It’s a place that stops people in their tracks — a view that shifts with the light, a detail you missed yesterday. Featured in Better Homes & Gardens, The Design Files, Postcards, Country Style, and international publications, Otways Loft has earned its reputation, yet no photograph truly prepares you for it.

This cabin rewards guests who appreciate craft, character, and a stay that doesn’t need to be filled with noise. If that sounds like you, you’ll love it here.

SLEEPING
The master bedroom on the second storey features a king bed and a freestanding claw-foot bath with treetop views.

The Hemingway Room sleeps up to three, with a balcony perfect for morning coffee.

The White Room sits on the ground level, with a queen bed tucked behind a sliding train carriage door that opens to the deck.

And above it all — up the permanent ladder — the Loft itself, with a double futon ideal for older kids or the more adventurous.

In total, the house sleeps up to eight.

THE KITCHEN AND LIVING
The kitchen is fully equipped and well-loved by guests — large oven, stove, microwave, dishwasher, Italian-style coffee maker, French press and pantry essentials.

The open plan kitchen, living and dining space — anchored by the wood-fired heater — is one of our favourite places to cook and gather. There’s a piano, Bluetooth speaker, books and board games. No television — and guests tell us they love it. Some stream on their own devices, but most find they simply stop needing to.

The deck overlooks the garden with lounge furniture, and the yard has outdoor dining and a hammock. Koalas have been spotted from right here. Wombats, wallabies, kangaroos and echidnas are regular visitors too.

FORREST AND THE OTWAYS
Forrest is a beautiful, quietly unhurried timber town — the kind of place that’s become harder to find. It sits on the edge of 100,000 hectares of national park, alive with birdsong and wildlife, and that is genuinely its greatest asset.

Otways Loft has direct ride-in ride-out access to almost 100km of world-class singletrack across 36 trails — the Forrest Mountain Bike Trail Network is considered one of Australia’s top mountain biking destinations, with trails for every level from easy to challenging. It’s right on the doorstep. Forrest MTB Hire is open every except Sunday — we recommend booking ahead or texting Michelle for last-minute availability.

Bush walks, waterfalls, Lake Elizabeth, Stevensons Falls and the Barwon River Reservoir are all within easy reach. The General Store is open daily, and Jen at Bodysmith — a beautiful little healing studio offering hot stone massage and Bowen therapy — is just a short walk from the Loft.

A note worth knowing — Regional Victoria is doing it tough at the moment and some businesses operate with reduced or changing hours. We do our best to stay across local openings and share the most up-to-date recommendations before your stay, though in a small regional town things can shift day to day. It’s all part of the slower rhythm here. The Loft is thoughtfully set up as a self-sufficient retreat — and guests who come prepared to cook, explore and unwind tend to have the best time.

Thirty minutes from Lorne and the Great Ocean Road. Twenty minutes from Birregurra.

HOSTING STYLE
We’re Fleur, Mike and the team behind Dufflebird Getaways — with over twenty years of hosting across Regional Victoria, and a deep connection to the Otways Loft, which holds a very special place for us.

We care deeply about this space, and it tends to resonate most with guests who value character, detail and a slower, more considered stay. Over the years, that shared appreciation has made hosting here something really special.

Before you arrive, you’ll receive our local guide, and we’re always happy to help shape your time — whether that’s mountain biking, walking, long lunches or simply switching off. We’re responsive if you need us, and have a trusted local team nearby for anything in person — otherwise, we’ll leave you completely to your stay.

Many of our guests return, which we think says everything.

Character around every corner. We hope you love it as much as we do.

COMBINING WITH STEAM CARRIAGE
The original vintage train carriage next door — Steam — is a separate Dufflebird property. When booked independently, both remain completely private. When booked together, they open up to accommodate larger groups of 10–12 (up to 14 at maximum). We recommend booking early if you’re hoping to secure both.

Guest access
The entire house and garden are completely private for your stay, including the deck, outdoor dining area, lounge furniture, and hammock

Other things to note
Linen and towels are provided — just bring your beach towels. Beds are made up to your preferences; just let us know in advance.

Dogs are welcome — please let us know before you arrive. We ask that dogs stay off furniture and beds and leave the house trace-free, so that every guest — including those with allergies — arrives to a fresh, clean space. A small dedicated dog run is available on the balcony, with a bed and bowl provided.

No smoking inside and no candles, please.

A Note on Pricing

Otways Loft is a large property to prepare, and our pricing is structured to suit both couples and larger groups. The base rate covers up to four guests, with an additional $50 per night per guest thereafter. If you need to adjust guest numbers after booking, just let us know and we’ll take care of it.

Neighbourhood highlights

Forrest was a logging town until two decades ago. Since then it has been reinvigorated as the centre for mountain biking in the state. World class mountain bike trails surround the town like ski runs at a snow resort.
The town is surrounded by gorgeous lush rain-forest, with massive gum trees, teeming with wildlife like kangaroos, koalas, wombats, wallaby's and echidnas. Scores of birds pass through the garden all day. Forrest is full of gorgeous birds.

The dawn birdsong is an authentic, country, wake-up-call, right in the heart of Forrest. Otways Loft is part of a historic timber town, the weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash, with it’s lush & abundant rainforest. Forrest has been described as a pristine playground for nature-based things to do. The place would be ideal for a solo creative retreat, a romantic getaway with your partner, or as a base to explore the region as a group with family and friends.

· Nestled in the main township of Forrest, surrounded by trees and morning birdsong / Be mindful that whilst the Loft is standalone, we do have neighbours and we are likely to have guests at Steam Carriage just over the fence & we’re alongside a laneway that locals & visitors walk, cycle & horse ride along
· Walkable to the General Store, Brewery, Pub and Dar Teta restaurant / May prefer the remote feel of Liptrap Loft if looking for seclusion
· Ride in & out of town to access mountain bike trails
· It's a log cabin and not well insulated for temperature or sound / we have air-conditioning in the living areas in summer and a wood burner with well stocked firewood and split system heater in winter
· 20min drive to beautiful Birregurra, easily access Lake Elizabeth, Stephenson Falls and Barwon River Reservoir
· Large property, comfortably accommodating groups / Consider Steam Carriage or Liptrap Loft as cosy option for a couple
· Board games, books and Bluetooth speaker provided, and WIFI for you to bring your own tv or movie streaming devices
· The Loft is popular with children of all ages (our best critics!) who love our playful & unique design / the stairs are steep and noise does travel so the space may not suit exhausted parents travelling with their little ones, we do have a fireplace guard, high chair & cot and there is a child gate at the top of the stairs
· Country living brings exciting sightings of wombats, koalas, wallabies, kangaroos and echidnas to name a few / we supply all you need to avoid mozzies and bugs, but keep in mind snake sightings are potential particularly in the warmer months
· We have a passionate team who are always on hand to assist at anytime, along with an Airguide App with 'how to' guides and compendium onsite to assist with smooth stays
· We have tried our best to provide everything a discerning guest may want or need for a comfortable getaway but please do note our properties are intentionally unconventional, so there are quirks to be found. We believe the quirks create the charm but please consider if you are suited to a property that is unique, rustic and different to a standard home.

Things To Do

Eating & Drinking
Good coffee is available at the General Store, lunch is sorted if you make it in time for their incredible house made pies and other delicious baked goods. They also stock all the supplies you need for an evening platter of local produce, along with the full range of Otways Distillery gin and other local wines.

Forrest Brewing offers a great menu from breakfast through to dinner, and the beer brewed on-site is a must try.

Platypi Chocolate is the perfect spot for those with a sweet tooth to enjoy an indulgent hot chocolate or casual lunch.

For pub fare, the Terminus Hotel doesn’t disappoint and is open most nights, always with a toasty fire in winter. The highlight? You can truly stay local, and walk to all of these fantastic options.

No doubt you have heard of the renowned Brae restaurant by Dan Hunter, which has been ranked in the top 50 restaurants in the world. Just 20 minutes from Otways Loft and set on a hillside in Birregurra, Brae is a place to be immersed in nature and eat from the land and is truly worth a visit. It will be a memorable experience, but you must book well in advance.

Yield in Birregurra also offers a fabulous degustation menu that is rapidly becoming recognised across the country for their commitment to building a stronger community by linking arms with farmers, makers and producers.

Mountain Biking
After logging ceased, Forrest was reinvented as a centre for mountain biking and the world class Forrest mountain bike trails have become the region’s signature activity. With over 60 kilometres of sign-posted single track, you will need a few days to make the most of them all! The trails literally surround the town, so our guests have a genuine ride-in, ride-out experience from Otways Loft. If you don’t have your own bikes, you can hire them on the way to Forrest in Anglesea or Geelong.

Otway Fly
A beautiful way to explore the rainforest of the Otways is at Otway Fly, with tree top walks and ziplining. It is the longest and highest rainforest skywalk in the world, and is a fantastic experience for kids.

Walks & Waterfalls
Spend your time visiting our favourite waterfalls - Hopetoun, Triplet and Beauchamp Falls. Beech Forest and the Redwood Forest are a must see of the region.

Closer to Otways Loft are Stephenson’s Falls and Lake Elizabeth, where platypus are frequently sighted at dawn and dusk, and glow worms at night. Little Aire Falls, Triplet Falls and the West Barwon Reservoir are also all worth a visit.

Most useless skill: Reciting the periodic table… up to argon
My husband Mike and I love one-of-a-kind places and things. In 2005, we bought a quirky cabin that became Liptrap Loft, winning awards and hearts and leading to Dufflebird – Unique Getaways for the Curious. Our escapes reflect what we value most when we travel ourselves: ease, reliability, character and soul, and touches of surprise and delight. We now offer eight handpicked escapes across regional Victoria and the coast, all within about 2¼ hours of Melbourne.
