Location

Daylesford, Victoria, Australia

The cottage is located right on the lake and our garden gate accesses the recently refurbished walking and boardwalk around the shoreline. On the track and in front of Lake House you'll discover a stone cairn marking the first discovery of gold in Daylesford - the beginnings of our good fortune. European miners accidentally discovered natural mineral water free flowing from rock formations disrupted by mining - our second stroke of good luck - this was liquid gold and travellers in the early 1920s and 30s came to drink and bathe in the mineral waters of the region.

Immediately across Leggatt Street, find the path and to the Central Springs, wandering past the old changing sheds you'll follow the spillway down to Sailors Creek. Here a flat picnic area and hand pumps remind us the gully has been used for over ninety years for sampling the mineral waters and enjoying time out with family. Further around the lake, you'll find Splinters Cafe, a casual retro local haunt; the Boat House for dining and in summer when canoe hire and paddle boats are popular. The lake is also popular for fishing and dog-friendly walks.

When visiting the Boat House at the end of the street, make sure you find the history wall in the back room - a collage of lake images dating from gold mining times - if you look carefully you'll be able to pick out your house - one of the old original miner's cottages on the old road to Ballarat. A glass of local wine on the deck is always a reason to linger.

If history and the geography is of special interest, don't miss a trip to the Daylesford Museum (weekends) showcasing our story: the gold found in the lake - about a tonne, Chinese miners and market gardeners populating the area, the huge shafts and tunnels under Lake Daylesford, the mullock heaps still in evidence today under the pine plantations - the area we know today barely recognizable in the 1850s.

Our botanical garden are also a treasure - planted over 150 years ago atop a volcanic peak - Wombat Hill - wonderful views, rare species, gentle walks and marvelously fresh air. The local "Friends of Wombat Hill Gardens" man a regular plant stall on weekends and you can always exchange planting ideas with the growing group on Thursday mornings.
