Great location
90% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
"Callignee II" is a remarkable, sustainable, 100% off the grid home that is nestled amongst 5 acres of bushland situated in the glorious Gippsland region.

This Architecturally designed, award-winning bush retreat was the first home featured on Grand Designs Australia.

Enjoy a beautiful weekend with your partner or friends and get lost amongst 5 acres of private bushland. Enjoy basking by the pool by day and enjoy a glass of wine by the beautiful fire-place come evening.

The space
Callignee 2 operates on eco-friendly/sustainable living principles and is 100 % off the grid. Meaning: (not on the electricity grid) and therefore prides itself on its energy efficiency, self-sustainability and total independence.

Understanding staying in a home “off the grid”.

Callignee eco house is a sustainable masterpiece. We pride ourselves on being totally self-sufficient, which means we rely 100% on the sun to power our home.
We have state of the art lithium battery storage which means almost all year round we can live purely on the sun. However; during the winter months when there is no sun, there are times when we do need to run our generator. We have a brand new key start generator that puts power back into the lithium batteries allowing normal use of power in the home. A user guide will be included with your check in details should you run out of power during your stay. Super easy. Please consider all this before making your booking, we absolutely love the way this house operates, it’s incorporates luxury and sustainability.

Rainwater is harvested onsite, solar power harnessed and waste from the home broken down via a Biolytic Blackwater system sunken into the earth.

Callignee II is designed so that every room enjoys the North sun. The kitchen, the heart of this home opens to the North directly connecting the pool and gardens. Giving guests the option to be catered for outside by the pool via its concrete island bench or inside at the unique dining table overlooking the South facing bushland.

The open plan area shares a double sided fireplace with water jacket ensuring all its energy is used. The west elevation of the living space brings the huge eucalypts into the home.

Callignee II is a multi-level construction with the main bedroom on the lower level showcasing a kingsize bed, leading into an artistic masterpiece ensuite featuring an open glass double head shower that offers no privacy-but invites you to become one with the surrounding.

The mezzanine level houses the second guest bed and a study nook. It’s a quirky space that takes advantage of the spectacular views out to the beautiful bush landscape.

Blurring the separation of indoor and outdoor living with bi-fold doors, the dwelling interior is as minimalist and contemporary as the exterior.

The walls and ceilings are Corten rust sheet and rust paints. The lines are clean and true to the elements that form them. Recycled timber from Melbourne's Princess Pier form the ceiling of the bedroom, bathroom vanity, dining table and some flooring.

The centrally located kitchen with state of the art European 5 star energy appliances has an island bench made from concrete & steel plus a tilt window that overlooks the pool area.

The nineteen meter lap pool can be viewed through a massive lounge window that also forms part of the pool wall and doubles as a luxurious water feature.

The home is surrounded by hand selected, strategically placed granite boulders, there is a pond with stepping stone access to the home and overhead there is a suspension bridge with access to the top level.

Dont forgot to make time to check out the magnificent Tarra Bulga National Park - 20 minutes drive from Callignee II.

Tarra Bulga National Park is famous for its lush gullies, giant mountain ash trees and tree ferns. Tarra Bulga National Park is one of only four major areas of cool temperate rainforest in the state.

Pack a Picnic under a mountain ash!!
Have lunch at the Tarra Bulga Picnic area, just off the Grand Ridge Road, or the Tarra Valley picnic area off Tarra Valley Road. Both spots are set amongst the giant mountain ash and shady fronds of tree ferns and offer tables, fireplaces, toilets and picnic shelters.

Bushwalks, waterfalls and rivers
Try out one of the numerous walking tracks that emanate from the picnic areas. Meander through the forest, head south down to Tarra Falls, or take the Fern Gully Nature Walk, which includes magnificent views along the famous suspension bridge.

The rainforest is a haven for plants and wildlife. Discover a wide variety of birds including the pilotbird, yellow tailed black cockatoo, eastern whipbird, and currawongs. Visit in the evening when the forest comes to life as possums, owls and bats emerge to feed. If you're lucky, you may see a lyrebird scratching the forest floor looking for food or catch a glimpse of some of the other inhabitants like wombats, swamp wallabies, gliders and platypuses.
