The space

The price is for booking out all 5 guest BRs of the 9 BR house - for up to 10 people. (Previously we let 6 BR for up to 11 but we have restructured. Get in touch to check our capacity for the dates you want.) Children are counted as guests - do not omit them in your booking request. Our guests choose not to stay in a motel because they can have the homely pleasures and spacious freedom of all this with the convenience of self-contained, self-catered accommodation. The hosts live-in, but respect your privacy and don't share your bathrooms. We share the two kitchens and three fridges by mutual agreement. Please let us know if you will need much fridge space.

Do not expect us to respond to your enquiry directly to your mobile phone or email. Airbnb blocks us from seeing your number and address so we must use this site to communicate until booked.

In low season we are open to negotiate your price down for booking out fewer bedrooms available. We could also give you a special offer for extended stays. Send us an enquiry with your proposal.

Taman Damai is not a luxury resort but a big and spacious family or social-group self-contained holiday accommodation of more than 50 squares on one acre of gardens with lots of Australian native eucalypts, sheoaks and teatree.

We are blessed with resident (and visiting) native fauna and birds on the property. We haven't seen a koala in our trees yet but they are in the area.

Lots of bedrooms means you can have friends or family holiday with you. Functions and parties may be approved by prior arrangement, within the limits of our house rules.

This is provincial living - we enjoy fresh healthy produce (including Australian native foods) from the veggie gardens and orchard and eggs from the chooks.

We have recently renovated a kitchen, added a deck, and repainted. Our dual-occupancy house is well lived in and could benefit from more renovation but we are just doing it a little bit at a time. No pretenses here. It is homely, clean, comfortable and safe but probably not for you if you expect 5-star indulgence or have glamorous Hollywood tastes! Our improvements are ongoing and we take on board guests' feedback to inform us what's most important to do next.

Guest access

Subject to renovations and availability, guests may access to up to five bedrooms, two bathrooms, two toilets, 3 lounge/sitting rooms, plus decks and garden settings.

Bedroom 1: "Gold Rush" - 1 Queen bed
Bedroom 2: "White Beach" - 1 Queen bed
Bedroom 3: "Pretty in Pink" - 1 Queen bed
Bedroom 4: "Blue Iris" - 1 Queen bed
Bedroom 5: "Boonwurung" - 1 Queen bed
Bedroom 6: Sorry - no longer available.
Portacot & requisites for baby available on request.
Beds are made up. Linen and towels supplied. We expect you to hang and reuse your towel. For extended-stay guests, we provide fresh linen and towels as required.

Bathroom 1: "Choir Practice" - Shower in glass cubicle, standard bath, double basin vanity, huge space, great acoustics!
Bathroom 2: "Retro Glory" - shower with glass screen, small corner bath, single basin vanity.

By prior arrangement, you may also use the laundry, clothesline and airing racks, 1 to 2 kitchens, 1 to 2 art studios and watch TV or movies in the theatre.

We offer art & craft classes and cooking classes with at least 3 days' notice, fees dependent on activity and numbers.

Many guests like to self-cater but please let us know if we need to provide fridge space. Our B&B-style experience is also very popular so if we are in residence on your dates (usually), then we can also supply a great country breakfast for a low extra charge. We could supply the produce for you to cook it yourself or Barbara will cook for you. Two breakfast options:
Generous Country Breakfast $17.50 includes yoghurt & seasonal fruit, then croissants & jam, then toast, bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes in season, baked beans, bottomless cuppa.
[New!] Light Provincial Breakfast $12.50 includes two freshly baked croissants, yogurt with fresh seasonal fruits (you may choose to take this as a blended smoothie) and bottomless cuppa.
Breakfast orders are payable prior - on check-in. Please advise if halal, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan or any allergies.

Candlelight Dinner - many guests have requested and rave about Barbara's fabulous catering around the antique 8-seater dinner table. Negotiable rates and fare but as a guide: 3 courses at only $50 per head. Very important you advise any allergies/ special dietary restrictions and picky preferences well in advance. If you book the dinner option it is payable in advance as lump sum on check-in. (No split bills.)

We can also help you arrange 'take away' dinner deliveries, at cost, for cheap eating in. Pizza is popular here.

Interaction with guests

Guests and the resident hosts, Julian & Barbara share the facilities. Your hosts currently use 4 of the 9 bedrooms. We have our own ensuites.
We can keep out of your way as best we can while going about our provincial routines. Or we will be your new friends and can give you a local home-stay experience, host garden tours, feeding the chooks, collecting the eggs, wildlife spotting, country cooking classes, art & craft workshops & activities. We can provide country breakfasts and candlelight dinners by separate arrangement.
Barbara is a professional training facilitator, artist and award winning songwriter and she's happy to share her wide-ranging expertise: art, weaving, gardening, songwriting, wildlife and cooking.
Julian is a keen photographer, wine lover and tourism champ who'd gladly guide or even accompany you on photo projects, tours and wine tasting around the Mornington Peninsula.

Other things to note

We often have first-timers enquire through airbnb and expect us to reply to their private email or mobile number but we can't - airbnb blocks email addresses and phone numbers. We only get this info after a booking is confirmed. We can answer your questions through the airbnb portal - no obligation to book.

Our fee for additional guests over 10 applies for adults and children alike - anyone 2years old or more. If you have a group larger than 10 maybe our place will not suit your needs. Please be honest about the number in your party or you will be liable to pay cash on arrival for extra guests, or worse have some guests turned away. We do not allow sleeping on couches or floor.

Directions supplied on confirmation of booking - further travel advice available on request.

Host speaks English and Bahasa.

Taman Damai honours and acknowledges the Boonwurung people as the traditional custodians of the land from which Taman Damai Country Retreat operates. We respect Boonwurrung elders, past and present. We are delighted to host indigenous guests at special discounted rates.

We sometimes offer special seasonal rates - refer to our calendar.

No parties or events

Some simple house rules apply and will be enforced through the withholding of your bond if you are in breach:

Strictly no pets, no smoking, no illegal activity anywhere inside and on the 1 acre property. No offensive language - including in music.

Keep your feet off the furniture, some of which is genuine French and Chinese antiques. No sleeping on couches. Children must not climb, jump or stand on furniture.

Access the things you need except from rooms, cupboards, drawers etc labeled 'private'.

If you use it, you clean it and put it away again.

Don't touch the original art works. They may be purchased. Parents supervise your children. Breakages will be claimed against your security deposit. As a guide our top-of-the-range fused glass sculpture is valued at $680.

No wet towels on beds or carpets. Please hang your towel.

Standard respect for neighbours expected with noise restrictions. We are a tree-change quiet country retreat. Sure, this is a great party house but we don't generally do loud music and wild parties except for New Year, Chinese New Year, Melbourne Cup, Christmas/Boxing Day. Don't plan a party or invite non-booked visitors unless you have express prior permission from the host.

Please respect our gardens and native wildlife - photos allowed (tag us on Instagram and social media), and feeding supervised by hosts okay. For many guests their close up experience with our ''tame'' possums is a highlight.

Children under adult supervision are fine to run around outside and play here but let us give you a safety briefing, especially if unfamiliar with country living. There are natural hazards.

You must also acknowledge
Some spaces are shared - 2 kitchens, 2 dining rooms and 3 fridges which guests and hosts can agree to share. 4 lounging zones we can share or specify for guests or hosts.

Barbara's place was nice and comfortable. The house is spacious and well divided so that you can enjoy your own privacy whilst still able to socialise with the host, if you wish.

Barbara made us feel very welcome with lovely scones on arrival and we had an amazing breakfast the following morning. Plenty of room for all of us and I loved the surroundings, with chickens providing fresh eggs for breakfast and enjoying listening to the sounds of nature. Thanks Barbara for an enjoyable stay :)

We stayed with Barbara across the New Years Weekend. Barbara was an excellent host who never intruded on our privacy. We arrived to beautiful scones and tea! The home itself was perfect and as per description. We had a group of 8, and we had enough bedrooms, bathrooms and living space to spread out across and have a relaxing weekend. We hope to be back for another stay.

Thanks for your review Yarlini. You and your family are all so lovely and such a pleasure to host. You are certainly welcome to come again and remember you promised me a sample of your mum's cooking!!! And you really must experience the hike and rock pool swim... as you must know from your brothers.

We had a memorable stay with Barbara. Our 5 yr old son earned his nickname 'shadow' from Barbara as he followed her morning and evening learning about the animals and her garden. The living and kitchen were spacious. Barbara was easy to deal with. Thank you Barbara for having us.

We had a lovely weekend and Barbara showed us around and pointed out all of the things we needed to know. She was very respectful of our privacy. The setting was relaxing, peaceful and homely. There was plenty of space and never felt that we didn't have enough space to stretch out.
