The space
Situated on the quieter more intimate end of Bruny Island, at Dennes Point, this charming, light filled sea side home set in a coastal bush garden is all about peace and comfort, with magnificent views, expansive sunny decks and great beach access.
Full of personal touches, Cloud garden was built by an artist with love, and in the tradition of Tassie shacks includes lots of recycled materials & retro finds . It has loads of charm and character, but best of all is its welcoming, relaxed vibe.
The large open plan living space has vaulted ceilings, a grand old chandelier that twinkles above the dining table and 1920's French doors that lead into a peaceful bedroom where you can hear the gentle lapping waves though an open window on a summers night.
The cosy wood fire amply heats the whole space in winter.
An eclectic home made kitchen is well equip with ample prep space, a large sized fridge for all your supplies... and Champagne glasses - the essentials in life!
There are two decks, both with lovely water and mountain views; one north facing with BBQ and outdoor dining table and a "west wing" deck, perfect to catch the late arvo sun , enjoy a drink and watch the sun go down.
The bush garden attracts many local visitors including an array of native birds, wallaby, beton, bandicoot, quoll and a resident echidna.

Ideally suited for couples, small families , solo travelers or two friends Cloud garden has two beds; a double and a single , both with comfortable, supportive mattresses. The sheets may not necessarily match,in fact very little is matchy - matchy in this house, but all fresh 100% cotton linens are supplied . There are mosquito nets above the beds and wire screens on windows.
The hot water outdoor shower in the garden is perfect to wash off after swims.

Cloud Garden also has a washing machine, TV/ DVD, CD player, books, straw hats, wet-suits, fishing bucket/ oyster knife, day pack, thermos etc... all the homey touches of a well loved beach house that you are welcome to use during your stay.

Cloud Garden is extremely ergonomic, well insulated, very comfortable and solar passive . Sun filled and cosy in winte and light and airy throughout the summer months.
Cloud Garden has solar panels, rainwater tanks, compost bins and we aim to recycle, re-use and repurposed as much as possible.

The combination of wonderful views, sense of peace and tranquility, access to the beach and personal touches make Cloud garden a special place to spend time.
Bookings: 2 night minimum .
On long weekends and public holidays prefered minimum stay 3 nights due to logistics of getting to the island for cleaning.

No Wi Fi provided but excellent mobile reception for hotspotting on this part of the island .

Guest access
The artists studio and a handful of personal cupboards are locked , but apart from this the house is yours.
The sandy path through the garden is on a slight incline when walking back up from the beach. There are five steps on each deck leading into the house , however the living space is all on one level with polished wood floors throughout. Cloud garden is within walking distance to the local jetty where you can fish for Flathead and squid, as well as a nearby Bruny Wild cafe ( 10 minute walk) that serves breakfasts, lunches and woodfire pizzas.
Its best to come to Bruny well stocked with food & beverages to self cater as the main supply shop on the island at Adventure Bay is a considerable drive. It is also advisable to top up with petrol before you come onto Bruny Island.
I will provide detailed instructions of how to get to Cloud Garden from Hobart with suggestions of the best places to to pick up fresh local produce and provisions along the way.
There are a few common sense house guidelines that you can access prior to arrival so you have a heads up on how everything works.
If you would like a third person / additional guests to stay it is important to make this request at the time of booking.
Please note : Bookings that include Christmas Day or the Easter weekend have a minimum stay of three nights due to the public holidays and limited availability for housekeeping.

Other things to note
Bruny is teaming with wildlife. A sea eagle flies by Cloud garden most days and there is a local mob of black cockatoos usually in the vicinity. Wallaby's, echidna, quoll and possums pass through our garden regularly as well as an array of birds.
If you feel like topping up the bird baths down in the garden in front of the deck you will likely see many species of birds and if you're lucky, the endangered tiny birds -Forty Spotted Pardalottes- that live around Dennes Point.
Unfortunately, there are also lots of ants on the island ( they love sandy soils!) and they sometimes make their way into this country beach house. We do our best to keep bugs at bay and clean thoroughly, however it’s impossible to eradicate them completely. We apologize if any of these little critters appear during your stay, but it is part of life on the island. We do have mosquito nets above the beds and wire screens on windows that are very effective in the height of summer to ensure you always get a peaceful night’s sleep.

Note: It is rare to see a snake but they do live on Bruny Island so be mindful when walking through the bush garden and sand dunes on warm days and evenings.

Neighbourhood highlights

Local Area
On foot:
If you make your way down through the bush garden path you will cross the road onto a lovely swimming beach ( child friendly) which is also great for kayaking and snorkeling around the rocks.
There are several other nice beaches within walking distance.
Head north along the beach front and in 5-6 minutes you will see steps leading up to the local café and gallery (The Jetty Cafe) that keeps seasonal hours so check the website. It serves espresso coffee, breakfast and lunch. You can book for Friday night fish and chips.
If you keep heading north you will see our local jetty where you can fish for squid or flat-head .
If you keep walking another couple of minutes north along the beach you will see a gate leading into a paddock (it’s okay to enter) and follow the path and history trail signs . Make your way around the tip of the island to ocean cliffs on the eastern side of the island (wonderful at sunrise!). Suggest you wear long pants walking through this grassy area in the summer months.

Alternatively you can head south at the bottom of Cloud garden : turn left and walk along the beach front road or around the rocks at low tide and you will reach the very beautiful Nebraska beach- an exceptionally long beach dotted with Shacks, where there are sandstone caves at its southernmost end ( this is a good 40 minute walk there and back) . You might find a few oysters on the rocks at low tide.

Further afield- Beyond Dennes Point

North Bruny is the less touristic end of the island, so it is generally quieter, and many travelers prefer this, but it can also serve as a good base for exploring the rest of Bruny Island. Jump in the car and head around the point along Killora Road to cruise around the back roads of nearby Barnes Bay.
OR for a longer outing, head to the South Island along Main Road back to the Dennes point turn off, and turn left . You will pass an Oyster Bar ‘Get Shucked’ at Great Bay (they make a good Bloody Mary). Bruny Island Honey supplies are located on your way to The Neck. Climb the stairs at the Neck for a spectacular lookout over north and south Bruny.

There are many lovely day walks in the national parks (through bush, rain forest and coastal trails) on South Bruny Island. I recommend Cape Queen Elizabeth at low tide or Fluted Cape (steeper but spectacular).
* Feel free to borrow the Thermos under the kitchen sink and the small back pack in the laundry for your excursions.

There is a good surf beach for swimming at Adventure Bay. There is a surf break at Cloudy Bay but be prepared to be fully wet suited and it is best suited to experienced surfers. The lighthouse on South Bruny is quite a drive but there can be spectacular sunsets in winter around 4.30pm with snow-capped mountains in the distance on a clear evening.
On South Bruny there are several tourist facilities if you feel like a bit more worldlier interaction. There is a pub, shop, pharmacy and health center at Alonnaha and a winery further south. Pennicott Wilderness boat tours ( need to book ) , a chocolate factory and tiny local museum are in the vicinity of Adventure Bay where you will also find a well-stocked general store with take away food and petrol pump.

As an artist, I was drawn into Bruny's beautiful landscapes some twenty plus years ago. Building Cloud Garden was a long held dream come true. It is a magical place and I hope you enjoy being there as much as I do.
