Long Tide retreat is a beautiful property, set amongst the trees with breathtaking ocean and forest views. Natural beauty and vast expanse merges with an earthy and tranquil barn style guest house. A truly magical space to rest and retreat from the world.

The space
We are the last property at the end of the street, making for an incredibly tranquil setting. Our stunning property sits at the end of a 1.5km long dirt road, with breathtaking ocean views at the very end of our quiet street. We are a gorgeous 10 minutes drive to Skenes Creek Beach, 15 minutes drive to Apollo Bay township & beaches, 60 minutes from Lorne and 25 minutes from the super cute inland town of Forrest.

Our property exists within a generous opening amongst the surrounding forest. Our house and the guest house sit separately, 50 or so metres apart, giving you your very own space, but we are here (or not too far away!) if you need us. We are very happy to give you complete privacy and we are also available should you need anything as we live on site “next door”.

The guest house is a unique 2 story + mezzanine barn style house, crafted naturally out of local and recycled timber. It has great energy with a wonderful, cozy, rustic feel. No traffic noise, no other houses nearby, just ours. The accommodation itself is natural, earthy, warm and very comfortable. The building was built chemical free and is so unique with its natural and recycled timbers and textures.

The guest house comes with a very spacious living area complete with a luxurious fire place, air conditioning/heating split system; giving you comfortable temperature control no matter what the Otway forest delivers weather wise. The living area upstairs has two comfy couches to spread out on, a big arm chair and a cozy papasan chair in the reading nook.

THERE IS NO GUEST WIFI AT LONG TIDE RETREAT as where we live is difficult and unreliable to service with a WIFI connection... but have no fear! We've made up for the lack of WIFI with other fabulous things.... We have heaps of books, magazines, a cupboard full of board games, drawing supplies and puzzles. There is a TV with regular regional TV channels and a blueray DVD player for any movies you may want to watch (current count is 150+ of our favourites on DVD). You can also bring a hard drive to plug into the DVD player to watch your own movies. There's also a Sony portable Bluetooth speaker for you to play your favourite music or podcast. You can access the internet with your smart phone or tablet via your own standard mobile data.

The fireplace is magnificent when it's cold outside, and we will provide all the fire wood you need to keep you warm and cosy. Firewood and kindling are located in the downstairs carport and you are free to use what you need during your stay. When the storms roll in, there is nothing better than curling up on the couch by the fire with a book and a cup of tea. Please help yourself to kindling and firewood from the carport downstairs when required. For your convenience the split system AC unit provides instant heat at the touch of a button, to keep you warm before you get the fire going.

Adjoining the living space we have a quaint, clean and functional kitchen completely set up with everything you need. Kitchen staples including oil, butter/margarine, salt + pepper, cow's milk, soy milk, lots of herbs and spices and some non perishable items in the cupboard are available. If it's in the kitchen, you're free to use it. The fridge/freezer, gas oven, gas cook top and microwave are all high quality updated appliances helping to make it easy to stay in and retreat. There's plenty of inside and outside dining space, perfect for exhaling for a short or long stay. We have a BBQ on the deck ready for you to use while soaking up the summer sunshine.

BEDROOM 1: is equipped with a king bed, with a large wardrobe space and bright, north facing window out to the garden.

BEDROOM 2: has a queen sized bed and is found in the upstairs mezzanine which is accessed via the attic ladder. The roof height is around 170cm at it's peak and pitches down either side, so it's cosy, but be sure to watch your head if you're tall. The roof window comes complete with block out blind, and easily opens right out to catch the breeze. You can also view the sun or moon rise to the east, or open to gaze at that wonderful starry sky on a clear night.

Beds are supplied with quality linen and beautiful natural soft goose down doonas. All towels are also supplied, dried in our solar power drier making them soft and fluffy.

The downstairs full bathroom is large, bright and luxurious, it blends a beautiful polished concrete floor with the natural textured timber walls and ceiling. It has a large shower complete with an amazing huge waterfall shower head. There is a gorgeous enamel claw foot bath, which can be enjoyed day or night, whilst watching the bird life in the neighbouring forest, or the stars on a clear night. There is a second toilet and sink upstairs also for those middle of the night trips.

Stepping out upstairs you will find the spacious viewing deck extending directly outside from the living space. It comes complete with big table, chairs and a BBQ. It's from here you will want to do some koala and bird watching or take in the sounds, smells, and sights of the forest and ocean.

In our kitchen we offer complimentary coffee beans ready to grind fresh and a selection of 10 beautiful organic teas. Occasionally we will have eggs to share from our chickens, bring your own just in case!

Many native animals live in this space with us. Koalas regularly visit as do wallabies, kangaroos and echidnas. The bird life is phenomenal, and incredible to listen to at first light or dusk, especially when the kookaburras start laughing. Oh, and the owls! You might get a glimpse of our resident Powerful Owl or the Boobook.

Our favourite part of day is that dreaminess of sunset, where the sky is often ablaze with intense colours that fill the atmosphere. The elevation expands the horizon in a way that really opens up the sky. On a clear night the sky is truly something you have to witness. With no light pollution, the stars will literally take your breath away. It is a totally different sky to anything you will see in the city or with lights around.

If you aren't feeling like heading to the beach, just stay in for a glass of wine on the deck or in front of the fire, or why not do some star gazing out the window from the deep claw foot bath? From the luxury of the pillow top beds to the organic tea and coffee on offer, we have created this space for you to stop and really sink in and relax. Give yourself permission to do nothing!

On our side of the fence we have 2 chocolate labradors. Frankie and Phoenix the youngest, who is Frankie's daughter. They are wonderful and love any opportunity to meet people. Phoenix likes to bark when someone arrives to let everyone know someone is here, but she is adorable, friendly and will always respect your space. We have a chicken coop with 14 girls laying eggs most days and a bee hive that helps pollenate our growing fruit tree orchard.

Dale runs his Osteopathic clinic by appointment from the downstairs portion of the barn on Tuesday-Friday and some Saturday mornings. Patients will come and go on those days from the separate space underneath the barn. The treatment room is totally separate from the accommodation. If you'd like to chat to Dale about Osteopathy please get in touch.

Where you’ll be

Skenes Creek North, Victoria, Australia

Skenes Creek North is a semi rural but mostly forest coastal landscape. To give you an example we have about 4 acres of cleared space and the rest is natural bush. Our neighbours are similar, some have a little more cleared space for orchards and grazing animals. We are about 400 metres above sea level. As such we are often above the sea mist in summer, and can also be right in the cloud mist in winter. It's magical.

Skenes Creek itself is in front of us and is a beautiful picturesque town ship on the edge of Apollo Bay. The town itself is just houses and a beach, with the exception of a caravan park, which sells newpapers, coffee, and milk.

The area is pristine national park as part of the Otway Ranges National Park and an endless number of beaches that extend in both directions along the great ocean road. It is a natural paradise and is so fun to explore in either direction, including inland where you will find old growth forest, waterfalls, and some tourist attractions such as the Otway treetop walk and redwood forest.

The township of Forrest is a haven for nature lovers, in particular moutain bikers due to its extensive range of trails. It also has a wonderful local brewery, an equally cool general store and is also the home of a boutique chocolate shop.

We are an easy going, relaxed, and happily married couple with 3 dogs, 12 chickens and 1 bee hive on a 170 acre property in the majestic Otway ranges just off the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. Dale is an Osteopath and Jackie is a jeweller. We absolutely love all the things we are surrounded by in our home, especially the old trees, the birds, and the ocean. We love to meet new like-minded people, and especially like to connect with animals, in particular the dog variety as reflected in our beautiful chocolate labradors Freckles, Frankie, and Phoenix. We spend time where possible travelling locally and abroad to explore, experience, and meet new people through random encounters and the airbnb community.
