Location

Freshwater, New South Wales, Australia

A GOLDEN beach, relaxed laid-back lifestyle and only 17km from Sydney's CBD - no wonder the residents of Freshwater are the happiest people in NSW. Famed for being the birthplace of Australian surfing culture, Freshwater has retained its distinct laid-back beachside holiday feel. On lazy summer days locals are drawn to the beautiful, rugged foreshore of Freshwater Beach, its adjoining park and headlands, and a laid-back village.

There's an ocean walking trail from Freshwater headland which is accessible from the end of our street. For those who enjoy moderate exercise you can continue north along Curl Curl Beach and follow the trail over the headland to Dee Why whilst enjoying majestic views of the ocean. You can then reward yourself at the bustling cafe scene opposite Dee Why beach.

Dining:
Special Occasion:
If you're after a special dining experience you can walk to hatted restaurant Pilu at Freshwater.

Casual Eateries:
There’s a thriving café scene in Freshwater village with excellent breakfast and lunch options, so take your pick! If you have young kids we suggest Room Two Ten as there’s not only delicious food and coffee but also plenty of space and a kids menu. Pilu at Freshwater beach operates a bustling kiosk for breakfast and lunch, or perhaps just a coffee, with sensational food and views overlooking the beach. Or there’s pizza (Koko’s Pizza and Marilynas Famous Pizza), burgers (JB & Sons) and a chicken shop (Freshie Chickens).

Restaurants:
The village in Freshwater also has many popular restaurants including Thai (Thai Khaen Khoon), Japanese (Sushi Hiro) and Indian (Shandar Tandoori).

Coffee:
Our favourite coffee is from Carlos Cafe on the corner of Albert St and Evans St. They roast their own beans onsite and have a strong following amongst the locals. There's also a cafe under the surf club at South Curl Curl Beach (less than 5 mins walk from our front door) if you’re after breakfast, lunch or a snack on the beach. In Freshwater village there are plenty more options.

Groceries:
IGA at Freshwater village is the closest supermarket.

Shopping:
For die-hard shoppers and fashionistas there’s a handful of specialist boutiques in Freshwater village renowned for their upmarket labels and designs. Try Splice Boutique, Bertie and 23 Albert. Westfield Warringah Mall is approximately 10 mins by car and includes a Hoyts Cinema and almost every other store you could imagine. A great place to explore if it’s raining.

Bakery:
The artisan bakery in Freshwater Village called Mrs Jones The Baker has amazing breads and pastries made on-site (and ice cream).

Drinks:
Those looking for a drink within walking distance can try Pilu Café at Freshwater Beach for Sardinian beers and wines with a view.

For a seafood platter and drinks in a casual beer garden go to Harbord Beach Hotel (referred to by locals as “The Hilton”).

If you’re up for cocktails, beers, wine, food and music, try Stowaway bar in Freshwater Village.

Those who are more adventurous there are too many restaurants and bars in Manly to name. We prefer to take the walk to Manly along the beach (take the stairs at the south end of Freshwater Beach). Alternatively an Uber takes about 5 minutes. Our favourite for food and drinks in Manly is Hugo’s on the ferry wharf for dinner and Wharf Bar or Donny’s Bar Manly for cocktails.

Fun Activities for Kids:
Ten pin bowling at AMF Dee Why (5 mins drive), Hoyts Cinemas at Warringah Mall (10 mins drive), Flip Out at Brookvale (5 mins drive), Many Surf n Slide (5-10 mins drive), Taronga Zoo (15-25 mins drive).

Fun Activities for Everyone:
Stand-up paddle boarding, surf lessons, kayaking, scuba diving/snorkelling at Shelly Beach, Spit-to-Manly walk/hike, tourist walk from Manly beach to Shelly Beach, walk/hike to North Head cliff-top lookout and café, ferry ride from Manly to Circular Quay/Darling Harbour/Barangaroo, spa treatments, yoga and pilates (Qi Freshwater offers casual visits), picnic at Clontarf reserve or Forty Baskets reserve.
