Location

Stawell, Grampians., Victoria, Australia

Stawell is the closest large town to the Grampians National Park (20min drive) and the park's tourist village of Halls Gap, making it an ideal base to explore the natural attractions in the area. Stawell is not as crowded as Halls Gap in peak times and so a relaxed place to stay, picnic and enjoy the surrounds 'away from the madding crowds'.
Stawell is handy to the start of the amazing 'Silo Arts Trail' which makes a great day's outing. See siloarttrail.com for map and details.

Stawell enjoyed a rich gold mining boom during the Victorian Gold Rush days. However, while mining ceased in 1920, the Magdala Mine opened in the 1980s and operated as one of Victoria's largest gold mines until 2016. There are great local walks to explore this history and relics of the past.

The town centre originally developed along Longfield Street (Western Highway), close to Pleasant Creek where gold was first discovered in 1853. Along Longfield Street is the old shire hall office (built in 1866) and a few doors down is Stawell's original courthouse (1860) which now operates as a local history museum.

Stawell's population later began to shift eastwards to the Big Hill area where quartz gold was discovered, and this is where Stawell's main commercial centre lies today. Shops line the Main Street between Layzell Street and Victoria Street, set against the backdrop of the Grampians mountain range to the south.

Notable historic buildings in Stawell include the railway station on Napier Street (built in 1877) which has been turned into a gallery showcasing paintings, sculptures and craft. The town hall, at the corner of Main Street and Joyce Lane, dates back to 1872, and there are several historic churches which grace the streets of Stawell.

Just to the east of the commercial centre of Stawell is Big Hill. The Pioneers Memorial at the peak offers fine views over the town centre and surrounding countryside across to the lakes and Grampians.

Delve into Stawell's rich and varied history and sample renowned local wines on your tour of the area. Located just 20-minutes out of Halls Gap, Stawell is the service centre for the Grampians and features fascinating cultural tours, museums, wineries and golf.
The Stawell Gift:
Be a part of the excitement as the country's best runners descend on Stawell for the Stawell Gift foot race, a part of the historic Easter festival since way back in 1878. Check out the Stawell Gift Hall of Fame to learn more about this iconic 120-metre dash.

Golden history:
Explore the Stawell Cultural Heritage Trail to see the town's striking gold rush architecture. Take a wander through the Town Hall, see gold rush artefacts and nineteenth century costumes at the Pleasant Creek Courthouse Museum, and visit the historic Stawell railway station.

Nature reserves:

Discover the Stawell Ironbarks Forest by bike or on foot. Located in the Deep Lead Nature Conservation Reserve, the forest is best seen in spring, when wild blooms are in season. Take in the natural surrounds and try to spot some of the endangered species that have made this forest one of the most important conservation sites in Victoria.

Ancient artworks:

Travel to nearby Black Range and take the walk to Bunjil's Shelter – a huge rock overhang with ancient rock art depicting Bunjil, an Aboriginal spirit figure.

I am a retired vigneron now writer, gardener and artist. Being creative, this reflects in the decor of the home. I love to travel - off the beaten track and seeking the unusual experience or encounter. In Geelong, I love being near the beach and the Botanic Gardens - my love of trees and acres of gardens being well served within an easy walk. I love the country feel and friendliness of Stawell and the Grampians. The wide open countryside and the views are iconic Australian. The locals are terrific and love to stop for a yarn. I hope you love your stay at either 'Chez Moi' in Geelong or 'Papillon' in Stawell, as much as I love the two quite different homes.
