A warm and cosy strawbale home built of natural materials, located in the middle of the rail trail. Beautiful outlook to the mountains and countryside. A few minutes walk to the village centre with store and hotel.

The space

Natural features of stone fireplace, earth and lime plastered walls and timber beams. An author's residence, The Strawbale house has a warm cosy interior, filled with books, NZ Art and retro treasures.

Guest access

The entire house except for the mezzanine floor, which is used for storage.

Interaction with guests

The home is my primary residence, however I stay in a separate stone cottage on the property when there are guests, which is private from the main house. I am on call for any assistance you may need and can give you as much privacy as you want, or more interaction if you want that too. The home is full of personal artwork and books. And if you wish, you can read about the journey to build The Strawbale House in a copy of my published book A Way Home (Potton and Burton).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Jillian. Her home is very lovely and cosy and she was a wonderful host. We would happily stay again and can definitely recommend to others.

Jillian is such a lovely person and made me feel very welcomed in her home. Her local knowledge is fantastic and she gave my partner and I some great travel tips. Plus she was great company I really enjoyed talking with her. I would definitely stay with Jillian again.

Great little spot for adventuring in central Otago. Jillian was lovely and incredibly accommodating. The bath is absolutely stunning after a long day on the trails. That paired with a great fire is always a win!

We arrived at the strawbale house just ahead of the snow. Woke up to a white blanket outside. The house was warm and snug inside, and so was the welcome from Jillian. We stayed for three lovely nights.

We had a fantastic stay at Jilian's beautiful place. It was probably our favourite place of the entire trip. Jilian has created an incredibly warm (figuratively and literally) home, which is an utter joy to stay in. Even though she wasn't there the night we stayed she had prepared a fire for us which was very appreciated after a long journey. The bath is also a highlight! Pretty unique to be able to stargaze from the tub. Only wish we could have stayed longer. Hoping to come back one day!

A strawbale house, built by Jillian and her family/friends in the very small town of Oturehua. I great spot to read a book by the fire and enjoy the serenity. Great proximity to the rail trail. Highly recommended for people looking for more unique/alternative accommodation.
