Two private islands to enjoy during your visit! Walk the rocky beaches. Hike along the trails that circumnavigate each island. Sit on the rocks and look at the ocean. Have a picnic. Sip some wine. Read. Think. Sleep. Meditate. Create. Dream. Just Be.

Located about an hour and a half from Bangor, and an hour north of Acadia National Park, Lower Birch Island is a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It is a great place for singles, couples, kids, and perfect for dogs!

The space

The two islands sit at the mouth of Pleasant Bay facing the open ocean. The 1,800 square foot, three bedroom, one and one-half bath house is on the 23.6 acre larger island. One bedroom has a king bed, one has a queen bed, and the third has twin beds. There is a queen sleep sofa in the living room.

The house was totally refurnished in the fall of 2013 and includes a new refrigerator and LP gas stove. The house is fully quipped and has a fireplace, wood stove, and LP gas heater. Electricity is provided by off grid solar power, with a backup gas generator. Water is provided by a drilled well.

The undeveloped, smaller 4.4 acres island is accessible by a land bridge that appears at low tide. You can walk across the land bridge for about four hours each tide cycle, so you have plenty of time to explore the small island and still return to the big island before the tide rolls back in.

Guest access

Boat travel from and back to Milbridge, Maine is included in the rental price. You can leave your car in Milbridge. Captain James Robertson, or one of his other captains, will take you on the scenic, 25 minute ride along the beautiful, rugged Maine coast to the island. The boat ride alone is an experience not to be missed. Have your camera or cell phone ready to take photos!

Upon arrival at the island, Captain Robertson will help you get your luggage and food to the house, orient you to the property, and then leave you to enjoy the peace and solitude. He can provide you with fresh (and I mean fresh, literally right out of the ocean) lobsters at any time during your stay at an additional charge.

Interaction with guests

Captain Robertson serves as the onsite rental manager and emergency contact during your visit. Ward Perry, the caretaker and builder of the house, serves as his back up. Both are local, life long residents and live nearby. I am available by cell phone any time.

I can't say enough good things about our visit to Stephen's place. We booked at the last minute and Stephen was very responsive and able to organize things last minute. Jamie, who pilots the boat out to the island, couldn't have been nicer. He was able to bring our kayaks out on his boat and was a great tour guide. The island is stunningly beautiful. There are loads of trails through the woods, great rock scrambling along the shore, loads of sea shells and a fire pit on the beach. The house itself is charming and very well appointed with all the kitchen gear, games, and paperback novels you could want. You can hear the ocean from the bedrooms and the view from the porch is perfect. My husband and I and our boys (ages 6 and 8) were in heaven.

If you need to get away from the grind and find some seclusion for your family this is the place to do it. This island is beautiful in so many ways and the fact that you have it all to yourself makes for a special kind of adventure. Glorious views confront you from the house and every corner of the island and the trails allow you to get some exercise and get to know Maine life. Take your time exploring the paths, the many different rock beaches and you can make each day fun, interesting and unique. Our four kids ages 4-10 enjoyed the island and found things to do everyday. They even became fans of the classic movies we watched together at night. 2 small notes of caution - Cell phones work, but not well, so plan to leave work at home and the rocks can be slippery for adults - my kids had much better balance than I did. The house is fully equipped and Captain Robertson and his family are great. We brought tons of food and enjoyed the family dinners together and of course ate lobster every day supplied fresh by Captain Robertson. We made campfires and did scavenger hunts for the kids most days but time flies when you are having fun. This will go down as one of the best vacations we have had as a family to date!

Our two families, with children ages 12, 13, 14, and 16, had a great time exploring the island and climbing the rocks. On the island, we saw a bald eagle, osprey, woodpeckers, flickers and lots of song birds. From the dock we saw porpoises, seals, and jellyfish. The house was roomy and comfortable enough for all eight of us. We also enjoyed a puffin tour and lobsters delivered fresh by Captain Robertson. We will be back!
