Description

The space

Welcome! Enjoy all the comforts of home in this fabulously restored vintage caravan. Come say hi to the chickens, borrow a bike, enjoy coffee and tea in the garden. You'll be close to pretty much everything and BART is 7 blocks away. We look forward to hosting you!

MAKING A RESERVATION: Please check out our FAQ & house rules first. If the dates you want aren't available, check out our other listing (click on our profile to see listings.)

Come glamp in our little slice of country life. This 1964 Kenskill camper has been fabulously restored and customized so you can play "pretend camp" while enjoying the comforts of home. This is a great spot especially if you've ever been tiny-home-curious.

In a previous life, this caravan was the food truck for Katie Cupcake, serving up the delicious treats in Flagstaff, AZ. You're sure to enjoy sweet dreams. ;)

We rearranged the interior so it feels much more spacious than the traditional layout. It's really quite nice inside. And yes, there's even a full bathroom with a proper flush toilet, sink, and small separate shower. Towels and linens provided.

All greywater (sinks and shower) is recycled into the garden. We'll provide you with biodegradable soaps safe for plants and animals.

Full kitchen is stocked with the tools you need to cook for your stay. Working gas range, double sink, microwave and fridge. Coffee and tea provided, plus fresh eggs when the hens start laying enough! In the meantime, watching "chicken TV" is a relaxing way to enjoy the garden.

Our place is one of those homes that's all front yard, and we positioned this trailer so you can sit at the dinette and enjoy a view of the garden and our silly flock of chickens.

Some people ask about safety. We've lived in the East Bay for 15 years, sampling the whole socioeconomic spectrum of neighborhoods. The only times we've ever had issues were in the "nicest" and the "worst" of them. We've felt more at home here in this slice of town that we've felt anywhere else in the Bay Area. Put on your city smarts and you should be A-OK.

That being said, there are lots of great places to eat and drink nearby whether you want to walk, bike or drive. Three great new restaurants opened nearby: Moxy (excellent beer garden with amazing fries), Restaurant 44 (comfortable bar/lounge with tasty fried dishes), and Easy Creole (casual and delicious). Our favorite local spot is Sweet Adeline with delicious pastries and tasty coffee. Another coffee and sandwich shop, Alchemy Cafe just opened up next to Easy Creole. It's straight out of Portlandia.

On Tuesdays, there's a farmer's market from 3-7pm just a couple blocks away! A little further and we have a Saturday market nearby too on Stanford Ave.

Your hosts are two UCB alums and former co-opers. Lewis is a programmer by day, musician by night. Ginger takes care of their new baby, Jules. We enjoy playing innkeep so after we get you all settled in, we'll leave you to your own devices, but don't hesitate to ask if you need anything.

Thanks for looking and happy travels!

Guest access

Everything inside the trailer, shared garden, loaner bikes (ask us first to get set up!). Patio is for cottage guests.

Interaction with guests

Once we get you all settled in, we'll leave you to your own devices. This is our home and we live onsite, so we're very accessible. You'll probably see us puttering around the garden or enjoying chicken theater at some point.

The neighbourhood

For some reason Airbnb doesn't know how to place us on the map. We're on the same block as Lois the Pie Queen -- a neighborhood fixture and solid greasy spoon diner. Although our neighborhood is not the prettiest, we have a great community and are happy to be raising a family here.

Getting around

7 block walk to the closest BART station, 20-25min train to SF.

Other things to note

We have a camp cot you can use as a second bed. To fit it, you will have to sacrifice the dinette.

***FAQ***
Q. Is there heat?
A. Yes, we provide a space heater that keeps it warm and cozy.

Q. Is there hot water?
A. Yes, there is a dedicated on-demand water heater for the caravan.

Q. If we don't want to share the bed, is there room to put a mat on the ground?
A. Kind of, but I wouldn't recommend it. You could fit a mat on the walkway to the bathroom, but then you'd have to step on each other to get around!

Q. Do you have luggage storage?
A. Sure, we can fit a few pieces of luggage in our supply room.

Q. Where do I park?
A. Parking is onstreet and fairly easy. If you don't get a spot just outside, you can usually find one on the block. Watch for street sweeping signs (a few hours out of the month).

Q. Can I get a discount?
A. We only offer discounts for long term stays, and the long term rates are automatically figured into the price.

Q. Can I bring an animal?
A. Sorry, no. We need to keep the space allergen-free.

***House Rules***

-Quiet hours (keep noises low) are between 10pm and 8am.
-You must be comfortable with cats, chickens, and cannabis. Smoking is OK outdoors; please use the ashtrays.

What a great stay in Oakland! Ginger and Lewis are gracious and wonderful hosts – and they've created a whimsical little retreat within the city (and one of my new favorite Airbnb stays!). Between the cool vintage trailer, the bikes available to borrow, the lovely garden, and the coop of friendly chickens, the whole experience couldn't be more enjoyable and relaxing.

I am so happy that I spent 2 days with Ginger and Lewis in this beautiful canvas. This place is a lot better than your think, clean, chill and more quiet than I thought in the Downtown Oakland. And Ginger and Lewis were so nice to me, easy communication. This trip did give me a some new feeling about Oakland right now. The location is really nice, like 5 minutes drive to Berkeley. I really appreciate Ginger and Lewis accepted my request for booking in this amazing place for two days. I would definitely recommend this place to my other friends who are going to Oakland or San Francisco for trip.

The Muffin Mansion is adorable. It's a small, but efficient space and the garden feels like an extension of the rental, which increases the sense of breathing room. I was looking for a week of solitude, so very much kept to myself. That said there was a light level of activity during the day of folks passing through the garden or talking to the cats & chickens. I found the activity inviting without feeling like an imposition on my solitude. The mansion is located within walking distance of a cute strip of restaurants + bars + bart, and close to a few other vibrant neighborhoods. I used ride-shares to get around to Berkeley & Emeryville with prices generally falling between $4-7. My one surprise was the size of the shower. It is very small. I'm a thick 5'8" and could not stand up straight with my hair in a high bun. The shower wouldn't keep me from coming back, but I'd definitely be prepared for more of a bird bath than a lavish bathing experience. Would for sure recommend!

Can I just say we love Oakland? Many of our guests come here as a base camp for exploring San Francisco, but Oakland is HOT. It's in the middle of a rapid transformation and the air is just crackling with energy. In all our travels, we've discovered that it's easy to visit a place, but it's hard to visit a time. If you want to experience a city that's alive, where Something Is Happening, where the glory days are here and now -- then Oakland is where you want to be.

We (Lewis and Ginger) are two UC Berkeley alums and former co-opers. As of this January, we are also new parents! Lewis plays with computers and music, Ginger plays with glass and design. Our son, Jules, is learning to blow spit bubbles. We love coffee, brew beer, throw BBQs and religiously attend the East Bay Bike Party. A few years back, we bought a fixer-upper and have been terraforming it here and there as the budget allows. As more and more friends and family started staying the night, we realized we love playing host. So we've decided to open up the place, give Airbnb a try, and play innkeep to folks passing through.

Together we've traveled to Norway, Peru, Nicaragua, Jalisco Mexico, New York, New Orleans, Boise ID, Madison WI, Denver CO, Salt Lake City, Tucson AZ, Chicago IL, all up and down the US Pacific Coast, Argentina, Philippines, and Bali.

P.S. My parents have a Philippines beach resort on Airbnb. Check it out: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/539038
