Built in 2017 refurbished in 2020, now tanked to give a better experience in winter. Situated in a large garden with uninterrupted views of the River Tamar, from both the cabin and decking, Ideal retreat for artists, writers, walkers and nature lovers. The garden is unsuitable for children as it is steep and bits are unstable There is strictly no fishing. Just enjoy a natural habitat, which is plentiful. You might see kingfishers, otters, cormorants, leaping fish, I hope so!

The space
The Ottery was originally built as an artist studio, but I decided the view was so beautiful I wanted to share it with other nature and peace lovers. It was completed in April 2017 and is situated at the end of my garden. It has wooden floors in the living areas and tile in the bathroom. It has decking on 2 sides with a table and chairs to enjoy being immersed in nature.
In the winter it is cosy but, it is a cabin, and does not have double glazing but gets warm quickly when the fire is lit, for which kiln dried wood is provided. Warmth can be maintained with an oil filled radiator, this to me is part of the romance of staying in a cabin in the winter. There is a condensation issue in the winter as it is warmer inside the building than out, but a handy tool and kitchen roll is provided so that the view is not obscured.

The cabin has far reaching views up the river and is situated close to an ancient monument, Newbridge which is a 16th Century bridge, it is 500 years old this year. There are 6 fantastic walks available by walking out of the front door, no need to use the car! When the river is being lazy you can swim from the garden, but you need to ask me first please so I can judge if it is safe as the currents can be deceptive.

It is close to Dartmoor and about 30 mins drive to the coast.
It has no wifi or TV, but I have provided basic artist materials (please bring your own paper), board games, jigsaws and books and magazines.

Mobile service is excellent for Vodafone and 02, but for other networks you might have to go on the roof to get a signal! If you need to contact someone, provided it is in the UK you are welcome to use my landline.

Guest access
The cabin is for your use solely, as is the roof of the cabin which is sunny and has a table and chairs for your use, I have been told on a clear night the view of stars is amazing. You can also share the garden including the fire pit. However I do have a decking area which I will have priority over, but if we get on well: you will be invited to join me, if you want to!

The lower level of the garden is unstable and you need to act sensibly down there, but there is seating and it is very tranquil and you have a unique view of the 16th century bridge!

Other things to note
The Ottery is in Gunnislake in the AONB The Tamar Valley and is steeped in beauty and history. The woods are filled with daffodils in Spring as the whole area used to be a market garden. Old engine houses and mines are dotted on both sides of the river.

Although there is parking, if you have a large vehicle (larger than a van) it is awkward and I might have to ask you to move your vehicle so that I can get out. I will be able to let you know in advance if this needs to happen.

I have provided insulated gloves and riddle for the fire, also an ash can for the fire outside, please use.

Dog owners please pick up pooh in the garden and try to keep animals on the floor.

Location

Newbridge, England, United Kingdom

Gunnislake is a working village with 4 pubs, a post office, general stores, an excellent butchers and a hardware and gift shop. It is situated about 200 meters from the cabin, but up a very steep hill (good exercise) there is free parking for 2 hours in the village. Gunni has a train station and a regular bus service. The nearest town, Tavistock is 5 miles away and is a market town. Plymouth is the nearest city by car it takes about 30 mins and is also accessible by a scenic train journey or by bus. There are restaurants close by and food round here is excellent. There are no nightclubs! Villagers tend to be very friendly, and helpful.

I am laid back and I hope kind (let me know if I sound teacherish! as I was one) I adore animals and nature, I dont have pets but would welcome well behaved ones! I am into keeping fit so do Aqua aerobics 3 times a week and like to go on long walks and swim twice a week. I love board games especially Scrabble. I have lived here for 15 years and might never leave. I am an outdoor person, but am not too keen on gardening at the moment! I am friendly and can be sociable, but also respect boundaries. I am tolerant and believe in equality for all, I am respectful but also like to know about people if they are willing to share with me. If anything is wrong I would prefer people to tell me. Thanks Mel mel
