Unbeatable location

The Garden Cottage is one of two listings at The Olives. It is an architect-designed facility near Yankalilla in the heart of South Australia's famed Fleurieu Peninsula, just one hour by road from Adelaide and near the McLaren Vale wine district. The Fleurieu is a drawcard for nature lovers and foodies and boasts superior sporting facilities such as The Links golf course at Lady Bay.

The space
The Garden Cottage nestles in the grounds of The Olives, a National Trust listed home built in 1859. It is an idyllic setting for those who just want to wash away the stresses of the city or use as a base to see and enjoy the attractions of SA's Fleurieu Peninsula, recently listed by Lonely Planet as the fifth most attractive destination in the world.

There are two bedrooms; one with a King size double bed heaped with pillows, waffle blankets and a soft doona; the other with two King singles which can be converted to a double. There is also a sofa bed in the central lounge area which can be used to increase capacity to six. Plantation shutters in the bedrooms allow guests to control the light and the wake-up views across the garden.

The central lounge also has kitchen facilities for tea or coffee (Nespresso capsules provided), a toaster, a microwave oven, a twin electric hotplate and an electric frypan. We will provide samples of our home-made olive oil, jams and fresh fruit as it is available. We assume most people will want to explore the fine cafes and restaurants across the Fleurieu, but if you choose to stay in and cook for yourself the facilities are available. If you want to barbecue, we have a gas Weber for you.

Guest access
Guests at the Garden Cottage are welcome to use the facilities of the entire 4-acre garden, where walking trails lead to lovely viewing and photo spots. Pose by the stunning wisteria arbor or play tic-tac-toe by the love seats on the main walk. The swimming pool is also available to guests. It is usually too cold to use the pool between April and October but if you're an iceberg and would like a swim, just ask.

Other things to note
The Olives features a spectacular garden and is a self-contained destination for those who bring their own supplies and want to relax in perfect peace and solitude. Guests will need a vehicle if they wish to eat at a variety of restaurants and cafes at Yankalilla (3 km) or Normanville (5 km).

We recommend AQUA BLUE, Kenton’s restaurant on Normanville Beach.

Other dining options are a little further afield.

Neighbourhood highlights

The Olives nestles in a valley about 3 km south of Yankalilla. It was one of the first buildings in the area, with its rear section built of "mud and pug" construction in the 1840s - within a decade of the settlement of South Australia. The imposing neo-Georgian facade and front section was added in 1859. The building was restored in 1975 and has recently undergone further renovations. There are no immediate neighbours in what is a beautiful, bucolic farming area.
