Kitchenette has stove/oven, small refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker and microwave. Pots, pans and utensils provided. Fresh-ground coffee.

Boat dock for up to 25'. On Skamokawa Creek, just off the lower Columbia River. Not suitable for sailboats due to low bridge. For canoes and kayaks, a small boat launch is just down the creek from us We are a short walk from a general store, the Redmen Hall Friends of Skamokawa Museum and bookshop, a wildlife refuge with several miles of flat, lightly used road for cycling, Skamokawa Vista Park, where you can walk one of the few beaches along the Columbia River.

Note on location. A major search engine maps us a few miles away from where we actually are. We are in central Skamokawa, a 5 minute walk from the general store and paddle center, and across the highway from Skamokawa Vista Park. We are located on the waterside of Skamokawa Creek, which empties into the Columbia River just downstream.

Access to front and back yards, in season - table and chairs under the apple tree, the creek-side is 30 feet from the back door to the apartment. Ample seating on the porch when the weather is fine. Free wi-fi.

Interaction with guests

We'll give you the keys and show you to your apartment when you arrive. We live just next door. Walk on over (or call or text) for any questions you might have or help we can give.

This is a rural area. We are on the edge of the cellular universe. AT and T, (or a service that uses their towers) is the only service that really works here.
Internet is provided by CenturyLink. We have the top service provided here "up to 10 mbps". We have two restaurants in our tiny town: The Duck Inn, walking distance, about 7 minutes, American menu and full bar with a deck overlooking Brook's Slough or The Roadkill Saloon, open Thur - Sun. Kathleen's place was great! We stayed for two nights between Christmas and New Years. There were three of us road tripping with two dogs, and she was happy to have all of us. The place was a bit hard to find, but Kathleen sent us great instructions. It's right off the road, but we never heard any noise from cars. The town is adorable and we had a great time exploring and taking photographs. We stocked up on everything we needed before heading there because we weren't sure what to expect, but there is a big general store with a selection of beer, basic food and supplies. There is also a great tavern called The Oasis just a few minutes walk away. It was beautiful inside and the owner Eileen was very welcoming. Our only complaint was that our bed was VERY squeaky! I guess that's a downside to all the beautiful antiques! Other than that we had a wonderful time and would definitely stay there again!

This was a lovely place to stay - beautifully decorated, comfortable and even came with freshly baked cookies. Kathleen was quick to respond to any inquiries and made us feel very welcome when we arrived. I would definitely stay here again.

The apartment: Kathleen's place was just as expected -- the pictures do it justice (or maybe the place does the pictures justice?)-- and when we arrived on Saturday afternoon Kathleen helped us settle in. Once inside, we found she'd left us homemade cookies, which was a lovely personal touch. The area: Although Skamokawa itself is rather sleepy, the surrounding area is beautiful. We had a quite fall walk on the boardwalk outside of the general store and then around the Columbian White-Tailed Deer refuge at sunset. Great place for a couple and/or a family that can conjur their own fun.

What a wonderful trip! Kathleen was very welcoming. This was the perfect getaway trip. The accomodations were clean and charming. We spent time across the street at the park where we had a little beach to ourselves. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at Roadkill Saloon with a homecooked meal and amazing cheesecake. We definitely plan to return in the future. Highly recommended!

We divide our time between the Skamokawa (ska-MOCK-away) National Historic District, where the houses all front on Skamokawa Creek, and historic Astoria Oregon. Until the 1930s, most local travel in Skamokawa was via boat. There were no through roads. We restored our 1890s Skamokawa waterfront house and opened it as a guest house in 2007. The creekside vacation home is two doors away from the guesthouse. Skamokawa vacation apartment is next door to the guesthouse, and breakfast or dinner is available at both of those locations with an extra charge. We also share the upper floor of our home in Astoria. Extra meals are not offered there, but Astoria abounds with good restaurants and pubs. We love our very rural part of the NW, in one of the Washington's smallest counties: Wahkiakum (whah-KIGH-ya-kum), and one of the oldest cities on the West Coast: Astoria, Oregon.
