The space

This beautiful wide beam barge is situated in stunning rural Medmenham from May to August, very well situated for access to Henley and Marlow, and the Chilterns, an area of outstanding natural beauty, as well as Reading. It moves to its winter mooring in the picturesque town of Wallingford between September and April listed separately at

The Baron II has recently been completely gutted and re-built and decorated, with wooden floors throughout.

Heating is provided through a wood burning squirrel stove in the living area, with a spacious modern open plan kitchen and living room area allowing for perfect use of the space. Meals can be enjoyed at the stylish breakfast bar, or al fresco depending on your preference and the weather. A fridge with a small freezer compartment, and a gas cooker with 4 hobs and a double oven are fitted.

There is a flat screen tv, along with a beautiful bluetooth stereo system complete with Tannoy speakers in the living area, with a two seater sofa and armchair to curl up in. A selection of books and games are available for guests to enjoy.

The bathroom is beautifully tiled, with a sink and newly installed power shower, as well as the latest in eco-friendly composting toilets balancing style with conscience.

The bedroom has a small double bed and storage for clothes.

If you are able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot, you can connect to the smart tv and make use of netflix and smart tv features. Alternatively, a selection of films is available for you to access offline.

Guests are not able to move the boat and it must remain moored where it is.

Please note that the Baron II is moored in Medmenham for the summer from May until August, and then in Wallingford for the winter from September until April.

This is a smoke free boat. Please refrain from smoking inside the boat or on the decks.

No pets please.

Please note that by their nature boats tend to have unusual access and so are not suitable for people with mobility difficulties.

Guest access

Towels and bedding provided as standard along with firewood for the stove in the lounge primed ready for you to light, or already roaring away if the weather is cold.

Out of respect for our local area, eco-friendly washing up liquid, soaps, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel are provided for your use during your stay. Waste water flows directly out into the river, and we are pleased to minimise the impact on our local environment.

Table and chairs are available for any meals that guests would like to enjoy on deck - a must when the weather allows, as well as a BBQ.

Guests are not able to move the boat and it must remain moored where it is.

Interaction with guests

To ease you in to your river break, where possible we will meet you to give you a quick run through how things on the boat (being off grid, there are some things that are different to a house). When this is not possible, we will call you to do the quick briefing before leaving you to your stay. To make sure you are able to relax on your break, we endeavour not to contact you once you're checked in, though are only a phone call away for any queries you may have.

Other things to note

The nearest shops are a 10 minute drive away in either Henley or Marlow. Breakfast is provided, and we recommend that guests bring other provisions with them.

Being in a rural setting on the river, there is a 10 minute walk from the parking to the mooring itself, across a sheep's grazing field. This allows for a quiet and serene setting, with minimal footfall past the mooring itself, and uninterrupted views across the river and surrounding countryside. If you would prefer not to walk though, you may prefer our winter mooring in Wallingford which is a 5 minute walk from local amenities (see separate listing).

Being an eco boat, there are special instructions for the running of electricity and the usage of shower and toilet. Guests are asked to follow the instructions provided.

What an amazing place- tucked away in a tranquil setting, with just lambs and ducks (and the odd passing kayaker, rower and houseboat) for company. The boat is beautiful inside and out and everything you could need (or want) for a quiet getaway. Highly recommended and Esther and family were super helpful in showing us how everything worked, before leaving us in peace for our stay.

If you are looking for a relaxing and peaceful night(s) away I cannot recommend Esther's beautiful boat enough. The boat is very spacious, clean and comfortable and we were surprised (given the wildlife the surrounds the area) how quiet it is at night. I would recommend the walk we did (allow 3.5hrs) from the boat to mill end lock where you cross the river and then along to temple lock where you cross the river again, then back to medmenam. We were impressed with the speedy communication from Esther and the tasty breakfast options. Thank you Esther and family x

Had a wonderfully relaxing stay on this beautiful boat, and would happily have stayed longer! It is the perfect place to unwind and escape reality for a while... as you walk away from the road, across the field, you mentally walk away from real life and can just sit and watch the water slip away and enjoy the antics of the birds and the few passing boats. Ensure you have a glass or two of wine and plenty of nibbles and hunker down for a while!! Comfortable but a bit different - and with Esther on hand just in case!

I am Esther - in my 30s, sociable, and outdoorsy. Music, reading and yoga float my boat along with going for walks with my little two little people and mountain biking with my husband.

Tobie bought the boat when we were first dating and lived on it until we married in 2012.

We have recently finished completely gutting and lovingly refurbishing it after a 2 year project kick started by it sinking in the floods in 2014, a few days before our little girl was born. Now with a little boy to join the fun, we love our very own personal bolt hole, and hope you do too!

We've loved the hosting experience so far, meeting lots of varied and interesting people. We've loved seeing our boat used for special occasions, surprises, mini breaks, research, and even proposals (she said yes!) - to have it being used and enjoyed by others really is a treat. As airbnb users ourselves we are always looking to learn from our own experiences too, and if there's anything in particular we can help with, we'd be more than happy to help.
