A 1925 Volcanic stone built house, offers a glimpse of the traditional ways of the Azorean people. Located among creeks, waterfalls and reserved beaches it´s a perfect stay for summer times. A car is a must in order to go to the nearest Village.

The space

Rustic house with the charm of old times. Place where I used to spend since a young age, my summer holidays. With a wide view over the river creek and the ocean, surrounded by beaches and waterfalls, this is an ideal house for those wanting some peace and comfort, near green fields and black sand beaches.

Vila Franca is only a few minutes by car, there you can find all kinds of markets, restaurants, etc. You can also pick some adventures like whale watching, scuba diving, hiking or bike tours in Vila Franca Marina. Surf is also good in some spots near the house.

Guest access

Guests have access to all features of the house.

Interaction with guests

Because summer times are our "busy season" we don't have much time to spend with our guests, nevertheless we always welcome everyone personally, if not at time of arrival, a little later in the evening. This way we can explain house details, connect and inspire unforgettable times.
We also have a gardener that usually passes by the house to water the plants and to welcome you with season fruits and vegetables.

Other things to note

It is important to understand this is a real rustic house. The house was built in 1925. It is an authentic Azorean house, built with traditional materials like volcanic stone walls, endemic wood ceiling structure and native clay roof tiles.

Because of this and because it is surrounded by nature some animals may enter the house like: mosquitos, ants, cockroaches, centipedes, small lizards, birds, bats, mice. Although any of these animals can enter only the first four are more likely to be found inside.

None of these animals are dangerous or cary any kind of disease, except mice. Mice have 50% chance of having leptospirosis, this disease spreads through contact with mouse urine and feces. They are likely to be found in good refuge places like piled wood or storage cabins. The best way to avoid contaminations is to wash your hands after going for wood or at any other place that might have mice. Although it is not impossible, mice have never been found inside Rustic House.

Centipedes can also leave a rash in your skin resembling a mosquito bite.

The house is the perfect place to go on hiking tours on the complete island of Sao Miguel. You can sit on the terrace and enjoy some great views of the ocean while you are having breakfast or dinner (with tomatoes and grapes from the garden), and it really feels very traditional with the small rooms and cozy atmosphere of the house. It's very central and only a 20-minute drive from the Airport, yet absolutely quiet (not counting the dogs in the night time and the cagarros ;o)) Joao and Susana are two most welcoming hosts - they even met us in middle of the night when our flight had come in. We found bread, cheese, butter and fruit for our first breakfast, and they offered their help with any trips on the island. It was easy to contact them via E-Mail.

Our stay at Rustic House was in a lot of aspects great. Without being luxurious the house has all the facilities you need for a stay on the Acores. We spent lots of evenings on the sunny terrace, drinking a glass of wine and enjoying the authenticity of the house and the small village. The warm reception by João and his family the first day (including the welcome pack with Azorean cheese, bread, fruits, milk etc...) made us feel very welcome. Also Silvano, the gardener, is very friendly to share fruits and vegetables from the garden, and always ready to help where possible. As Rustic House is on a central location it is a very good base for exploring the island (30min to Ponta Delgada, 45min Ribera Grande, 20min Furnas) Alltough it is close to the southern highway, we did not notice any negative impact of this. The village is very rural and quiet and all day the endemic bats fly in front of the terrace overlooking the local river valley. We are sure to come back again in our second trip to Sao Miguel.

We enjoyed our 10 days stay in Joao's stone house. The view over the valley and ocean was spectacular and we spent many lovely times enjoying the view over a morning coffee, a glass of wine, a meal cooked on the bbq. We enjoyed our daily visits with Sylvan and his endless contributions of local produce, and flowers! And the many ways we could communicate with each other. In between rainshowers, clouds and sunshine we were able to explore so much on the island, beautiful hikes, trying out the different hotsprings, wandering through villages, an afternoon out on a boat to see whales and dolphins. The house is very well located, but we found car to be essential. Easy drive to supermarket and lots of fresh produce available as well local cheeses and wines. You can walk down to the beach via shortcut. It wasn't warm enough to swim, but you can sit at the bar on a sunny day and enjoy the view, sound and smell of the sea over a glass of local wine or beer. We ate several times at a good fish restaurant overlooking sea in Caloura, charming, good food and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend Joao's house for your stay on St. Miguel.
