Hannah's Haven is a cozy 2nd floor apartment in my home, with a separate entrance. My youngest daughter, Hannah, lived here for 5 years. It was a Haven for her, hence the name. It is in the historic Oakland neighborhood of Topeka. Off street parking is in back, off a well-lit alley. It's in a residential area, but convenient to downtown Topeka, including the Capitol. It is nicely decorated, fully equipped for short or long term stays and has plenty of space for one or two guests.

The space
The apartment has been redecorated and there are lots of windows, so lots of light. I think that's my favorite feature of the whole house. The kitchen sink and counter have been upgraded to make cleaning up much easier. The bedroom has a queen size bed and there is a twin size air-bed, the height of a regular bed, which can fit in the living room. The entire space is for for my guests and the separate entrance makes it private.

Guest access
This apartment has a separate entrance, so guests have private access to this completely furnished space. There is a covered patio with furniture next to the detached garage at the back of the property. That is a available for guests, as well, weather permitting.

Other things to note
It's just half a block from The Pizza Parlor, a popular eating place in Oakland, for decades. This new location is large and has lots of TV's, so it's a great place to watch whatever sporting event is a must see. On the other end of the scale is Chez Yasu, a French restaurant with a Japanese chef. It is about a 15 minute drive. The food is excellent and highly recommended by Hannah, who lived in France for a summer. We only go there on very special occasions, but it is worth the higher price. There are other unique places to eat and see in Topeka, which is an easy city to navigate. Just ask me for suggestions and directions. Some of my suggestions are in the house manual you will see when you arrive.

Oakland is an ethnically diverse community, which makes it fun to live here. Germanfest in early June is within walking distance of my house. The annual Fiesta Mexicana in mid-July is also within walking distance of my house. So far, this year, the Fiesta has been delayed until September.

When I retired from teaching, I knew I'd miss the kids, so I substitute taught for nine years. Now I have retired again. I am healthy and enjoy life. I travel to see my grandchildren and their families in Ohio and Virginia. I go to Alaska to see my brother and Florida to see a sister. Hannah is the youngest of my three daughters. She has a master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and taught in a French school in east Africa for two years. Hannah was married in October of 2017 in a private ceremony at Lake Shawnee gardens. Now that she is married and won't be coming home to live, Hannah's Haven is available full time. I have lived in Kansas (born and raised here), Colorado, Virginia, and West Virginia. I have traveled to England, Israel, and Africa. I sing on the worship team at my church and am active in my neighborhood improvement association. I am also involved with one of the ministries of the Topeka Rescue Mission.

During your stay
Because of Covid, I suggest my guests use self check-in. I prefer to greet my guests and that can be accomplished in the yard, at a safe distance, with masks. Since I won't be showing the guest(s) the apartment, it will be especially important to read my house manual. If there is something that needs my attention, I want to know right away. You will be able to reach me by call or text to my cell phone.
