A romantic getaway in the heart of Kyoto, The Cocoon Room is the dream space for your dream trip to Kyoto. Set on a quiet street in Downtown, it's a perfectly comfortable backdrop for you to unwind after a day's sightseeing.

The space
Considering an extraordinary space for your visit to Kyoto? The Cocoon Room is as cozy a room as you're likely to find in the city. After a day of wandering, there's nothing like coming back to a place resplendent in comfort and tranquility. Its unique layout designed by a local Kyotoite, The Cocoon Room is emblematic of a designer's renaissance, in which classic materials blend together beautifully with atmospheric imagination.

The Cocoon Room is in an old neighborhood noted for its evocative architecture. It is not uncommon to see women passing in colorful kimono and hear monks wandering the streets chanting their blessings. The subway, as well as convenience stores and a supermarket, is less than five minutes' walk. Nijo Castle, The Imperial Park, the Manga Museum, Sanjo-Dori (the Downtown shopping district), and dozens of restaurants, cafes, and bars are within an easy ten minute stroll (to which I can provide an online resource guide and map with gourmet suggestions), and the beautiful Kamo River and Higashiyama (East Kyoto), with its many temples, is a quick twenty-minute bicycle ride away, or if you prefer, a scenic walk. Buses to go around the city are conveniently boarded just a few blocks away at the Imperial Palace and Nijo-Castle. While enjoying the space's tranquility, it's nearly as central as a visitor to Kyoto can be.

One of the great pleasures of visiting Kyoto is dining out. But as it can be intimidating finding the right place to eat and drink, I have prepared a detailed ONLINE GUIDE available only to my guests with map links for finding the place you want to go to. This is easy because all guests receive POCKET WIFI to help them find their way around the city.

An intimate space, The Cocoon Room is ideal for couples, but can accommodate families as well (the children sleeping either with the parents or on the couch, which folds out.) Travel buddies can also enjoy the room, as the beds can be separated.

Tea and coffee are provided. And there is a stereo unit for relaxing after a long day of sightseeing. The room has an air conditioning unit and fan for the Japanese summer and a strong heating system for the Japanese winter.

If you are still not sure about whether to book the space, do read some of my 300+ reviews. The Cocoon Room has been hosting people from around the world for more than four years. Not only is it a popular choice, but many guests have really had an extraordinary stay.

I look forward to meeting you.

*** If the Cocoon Room is booked, please see if my other space, The Moon Room. It has a designer's aesthetic as well. It's linked on my profile if you click on my picture. Or if The Cocoon Room is booked for part of your stay and The Moon Room is available, why not stay in both? They are upstairs/downstairs from each other and so quite convenient to change rooms.***

Where you’ll be

Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan

Kyoto is a beautiful city and nearly every neighborhood has its own charm, but the the Cocoon Room is located between Nijo Castle, the Imperial Palace, and the Manga Museum, on a quiet street just off Downtown. Though there are some (tasteful) modern buildings, many traditional machiyas remain and a quiet stroll around the neighborhood will reveal to the wanderer traditional crafts still at work, as well as unique galleries and lovely gardens for tea. There are many restaurants and cafes in the area, for which I provide a handmade map to help you find your way. The Cocoon Room is great for families since it is less than ten minutes' walk from a major playground/ children's center as well as the Manga Museum.

Hi there. My name is Sean and I'm a native of Los Angeles, California. As of autumn, 2019, I have been in Kyoto more than eight years and have been running my two popular design spaces, The Cocoon Room and the Moon Room, for about six years. I'm always happy to meet fellow travelers. I hope you decide to stay in one of my spaces and that you feel as comfortable as you would be at home. It's been a pleasure and an honor hosting strangers on their trips to Kyoto, as I know it is a very special journey. I know the city well and provide an in-depth map as well as an online resource guide to help people enjoy the culture's very unique dining and drinking experience (along with a pocket wifi to help you find anything and everything easily enough). I love photography, reading, music, cinema, and, of course, travel. When I can I collect vinyl from the many record shops around town and enjoy the culinary scene in Kyoto. I love going to cafes and reading novels and history books. I've traveled to many places in Japan, but have also had wonderful experiences in Eastern and Southern Africa, India, Morocco, and Guatemala. I'm hoping to spend time visiting Mongolia, Burma, Nepal, and South America in the next few years. Lately, I have enjoyed traveling with my son, who is almost three and learning all about the world. Thank you for considering my rooms and I hope you decide to stay.

During your stay

Generally I greet and say farewell to guests if I am in town and not busy with work. Otherwise, as the room is a self-contained unit, I don't usually see you, save coincidental encounters in the street.
