Once Donolario was a typical agricultural unit in the Calasetta countryside. Presently it is a three-house complex, set in a Mediterranean garden. It is located on Sant'Antioco's Island, in the Cussorgia plain (5 minutes drive from Calasetta), among vineyards and pastures and a few hundred meters from the sea.
Donolario-1 is a typical “casello”, a toll house with a living room on the ground floor and a mezzanine, looking onto it, with a double bed and a bathroom. Outside, a large veranda.

The space

The Donolario complex consists of three adjacent houses, resulting from the restructuring of a typical Calasetta agro–wine complex, set within a Mediterranean garden of 5,000 sq m. It situated in the plain of Cussorgia (5 minutes drive from Calasetta), in an area of vineyards and pastures, a few hundred meters from the sea. One house is reserved for the use of the owners, while the other two are for rent.
One of them (Donolario-1) is a typical “casello”, a toll house with a living room on the ground floor and a mezzanine looking onto it, with a double bed and a bathroom. Outside the living room, there is the veranda (locally called “lolla”), which faces the garden.
The second house (Donolario-2) is a loft (150 sq m), obtained from the transformation of a wine store, with two bedrooms (4 beds), a large living room with fireplace, a spacious mezzanine overlooking the living room (where three more beds are located) and a bathroom. It is all surrounded by a veranda.

The restoration of the historical agricultural complex was performed with philological methods, by maintaining the traditional construction features of Sardinian houses: stone walls, tiled roofs, beams of juniper in the verandas. Even the ancient stone threshing floor was perfectly preserved. The furnishing, too, was carefully considered, in order to preserve the tradition by recovering, when possible, original Sardinian furniture. So you will live the experience and the charm of a historic Sardinian home, while enjoying the comfort of a modern accommodation.
Donolario-1 and 2 are adjacent to each other and can be interconnected through an internal door, in order to form a single unit when they are rent by the same guest. They share an outdoor kitchen, with barbecue, placed under a veranda in the garden, and an open-air shower. Their verandas (lolle) develop seamlessly, but can be separated by a curtain if guests want it.
Both the units are equipped with air conditioning in summer and winter heating. Car parking is in the garden.
The two houses are rentable all year long.

Guest access

The “casello” is exclusively at guests' disposal, together with the veranda in front of it. The garden will be shared with the guests of Donolario-2, but given its size everyone will be able to find, among pine spots and shrubs, a sheltered corner to relax.

Other things to note

The water comes from our own well, which draws on a small aquifer, 100 meters deep. Water never fails; it’s valuable because only winter rainfall recharges the aquifer. Given its depth, the water is very clear, but slightly salt. For this reason, I recommend you use bottled water for drinking or for tea and coffee making. However, it’s suitable for cooking.

The presence of salt in the water leaves some halos on flatware and dishes. Do not worry then if you notice them: it's not dirty!

The municipality implements separate collection of rubbish; therefore you are invited to deposit your rubbish in the prescribed way in the different containers near the parking lots. It will be collected by the rubbish collectors according to an established calendar. You will find detailed instructions there.

The apartment is equipped with air conditioning / heating.
The kitchen is fully equipped: fridge, freezer and washing machines.

Finally, do not be afraid of geckos. They are totally harmless and very nice. They live in the walls and feed on small insects, especially mosquitoes, and are therefore very useful. Seeing them hunting in the veranda in the evening is a show: still as statues, they mesmerize the prey with their big eyes and suddenly, with a stunning speed, sprint and swallow it.

This was a really quiet, peaceful and beautiful place to stay. We really enjoyed sitting on the veranda and soaking in the views with our evening drinks. There was a real sense of being "away from it all" whilst still being within easy driving distance of amenities. Inside, the kitchen was very well-equipped (perfect for us as we had decided to self-cater) and the house was clean and comfortable. There are great beaches just a few minutes' drive away. This is a relaxing and well-located base for exploring Sant'Antioco.

About Federico

Casa: buon cibo, un bicchiere di vino, un'amaca e la pace. Viaggio: vento, sole, sabbia, avventura. Viaggio cercando luoghi accoglienti, se posso, offro lo stesso agli altri.

In my opinion home is good food, a glass of wine, an hammock and peace; otherwise journey is wind, sun, sand and adventure.
I travel looking for home, when I can, I give you the same.
